Okay. First off, no more sentimental stuff between Burton and Nick. Let me thinks what happens next with the Newburgs . . . So Nick talks to the mall lawyer, and finds that the will is iron-clad. Now, keep in mind that Nick has this sneaking suspicion that all is not right in the Newburg household. In fact, his instincts are telling him that Wendy is being molested--by her father. Going with this thought, Nick seeks out Laurie Solt for a chat. He explains the"hypothetical" situation that makes him wonder if cutting herself would be a way for Wendy to deal with the sexual molestation. Laurie confirms that in many cases, cutting is just that. She also tells Nick that if he suspects this is going on, that she is going to need concrete proof so she can investigate it.

Studly Nick now sets off for a little more investigation into the issue. He drives over to Wendy Newburg's expensive private school as classes are letting out for the day, and asks if they can talk. They walk over to a bench nearby (clever of him to make sure he meets her in public! ), and first off, Wendy shows Nick her new bracelet. She tells him it's a gift from her dad, and that she and her dad are very close. In fact, not long ago, he took her to see this innovative ballet troupe perform. It was very avante gard. At the end the dancers performed in the nude (), and how on the way home she and Dad had discussed how natural and wonderful the body is. Nick is definitely wary now! He asks her a few more questions, but she refuses to give him any definite answers as to whether her father is molesting her.

Next scene: Nick in a bar (we don't know if it's the Incline or not) having a drink and a chat with Ray Harper, Susan's (Sis' real name!) husband.
Ray (who seems a really nice person) tells Nick about how Susan had major bouts of depression, and how he had found out that during her childhood and adolesence, her father had been molesting her. Despite the good relationship and happiness he and Susan shared, she was unable to overcome the trauma this had caused her, and had killed herself.

Meanwhile back at F&A . . .
Burton sends Nick over to the Newburg house to go through some legal documents they have found for him to look at (I can't remember what he was looking for, something to do with the case against Ray, I think). Anyway, Frank Newburg shows Nick to the dining room where these file boxes are set out on the table. As Nick starts opening them up, Newburg explains that his wife is out, Wendy is at school, and he's going to the office. Nick says fine, and settles down to work.
A few minutes after Newburg leaves, Nick feels it's safe and goes into Newburg's study to poke and pry a bit. Looking around in the desk, he finds a key that opens the top right drawer. Unlocking it, he finds a small album of photos of Susan in compromising positions taken by her father. Nick looks visibly ill. Just then, the study door pops open, and Newburg says, "I forgot something."
He looks suprised at what Nick has in his hands, and goes on to explain to Nick how he knew his sexual relationship with Susan had been wrong, but it was an illness, and he couldn't help himself. I think he also tells Nick that this has never happened with Wendy.

Nick heads back to the office, where he goes to chat with Burton (OK, maybe there are some good moments, but they aren't personal, they revolve around the Newburgs!). He tells Burton what he's found, and Burton is shocked () Burton then adds further info--he had dinner the night before with Frank Newburg, and Newburg had led him into a conversation about attorney-client privileged information. Burton now realizes that Newburg had started the conversation so that he would know under what circumstances he could reveal the truth to Nick and Burton, and yet have them unable to report it to the authorities because of privilege (hence the title ) He (Burton) then questions Nick to make certain of the exact circumstances under which Newburg told this to Nick. Essentially, as Nick was at his house on business doing research, everything Newburg said is protected.

Nick is thoroughly pissed off now!! Not only has Newburg confessed everything, he's made sure Nick can't do anything about it!
So our dashing hero heads back over to the courthouse to talk to Laurie. This time he names names. Laurie tells him that if she's to act on this info, he has got to be sure. He tells her he is, but that he's got to remain anonymous or he can be disbarred.
He goes back to Wendy's school to try to talk to her again. She is very hostile to him this time, telling him that she doesn't want out of the situation, that through this she has EARNED her 11 million dollar trust fund, and that in two more years she'll be in college and out of the situation. Nick tells her that regardless of her opinion, what her father had done is wrong, and Newburg has to pay.

I forgot to mention that Laurie told Nick that if he was certain of everything, he should call a hotline number (which she gives him), and report it anonymously.
Back at the office, Nick and Burton talk again. Nick outlines everything he's learned. Burton still says that they can't phone in the charge, because that could cause them both to lose their licenses. Nick says that doesn't matter, they HAVE to report it. Burton finally gives in, and tells Nick to do what he has to do, and walks out of the office. Nick places the call.

We next see a courtroom, where Lulu is representing an extremely hostile Wendy Newburg. Laurie tells the judge the situation, asking that Wendy be placed in foster care pending investigation. When asked what she wants, Wendy replies that she wants nothing but to go home.
The judge then asks Laurie who phoned in the claim of molestation, and Laurie says that she cannot reveal that, only that it is a VERY reliable source. The judge acts reluctant to believe this, and so Nick (who's been sitting in the back of the courtroom all along) stands up and tells the judge that he's the one who reported it. The judge places Wendy in foster care.
As they are leaving the courtroom, Newburg threatens Nick with disbarment, telling him he has connections. Nick just looks at him in open disgust and walks on. As he passes Dawn Newburg, she places her hand on his arm and says very sincerely to him "Thank you." (there was a lot of meaning in those words)
In the final scene, Nick goes to the shelter where they have placed Wendy to tell her to feel free to call him if there is anything he can do to help. She gives him the cold shoulder, and lets him know that she blames him for destroying her world.
Nick is left feeling guilt for the pain he has caused the family, but also knowing that he did the right thing, but it is little consolation.
