A house Nick is standing in what appears to be the living room or great room, looking at a picture taken of the current family who owns it.
Lulu and the realtor, Penny, come down the stairs, chatting about the house’s features. They ask what he thinks of it, if he’s looked around. He says yes, he has, and that it’s nice. Lulu asks if he wants her opinion of it, or if he wants to form his own opinion of it. He smiles and says he’s trying hard to form his own opinion. Lulu and Penny head out to see the yard, asking if he’s coming. Nick says he’ll catch up, and looks at the family picture again, this time drawn to one of the children, a teenage boy, sitting a little behind the rest of the family, looking off into the distance, away from everyone else.

Burton tells him no, he’s not having the surgery now, the Onyx merger is too important. Nick tries to argue that he can handle it, but Burton waves him away.

LSP Nick and Suzanne get off the elevator together, chatting amiably. She’s telling him about her one and only online-dating experience (it turned out to be an 18 year old boy!), and he’s laughing at her story.
As they walk towards his office, Lulu approaches, looking serious and asking if they can talk. Suzanne tells Nick she’ll talk to Chris, and leaves.
Lulu asks if Nick likes the house they looked at. Nick doesn’t really give her an answer, but asks if she wants the house. He admits that he was a bit distracted when they looked at it, and agrees to look at it again.

Nick suggests that he buy it and that they live in it together. Lulu vetoes this idea, saying she wants to contribute, for them to own it equally. Nick points out the irony that “You won’t marry me, but you’ll enter into a 30-year mortgage with me.”

Nick’s house, that night, in bed Lulu is curled up on her side, seemingly asleep, while Nick lays beside her, on his back, staring up at the ceiling.*
Suddenly, the phone rings. Nick reaches over to answer it. It’s Suzanne Pell, calling to tell him that Chris tried to escape from boot camp, and that he was beaten by one of the counselors.

Lulu was awakened by the phone, and asks who it was. Nick says it was Suzanne calling about the boy in the boot camp being beaten. Lulu accepts this calmly, starts talking about the house and the baby. The phone rings again, as Nick reaches to answer it, Lulu snaps “Does Suzanne Pell really need you at 3 o’clock in the morning?”

Hospital Burton is lying in a hospital bed, looking tired and pale. Nick comes in, saying he finally spoke to the doctor, and it wasn’t a heart attack. Burton says he didn’t think it was, but he noticed it when he went upstairs to get a pack of cigarettes. Nick mentions Dr. Driscoll again, asking if Burton doesn’t think they should go ahead with the surgery. Burton agrees. Then he starts telling Nick how to talk to the people at Onyx about the merger.

Nick’s house Lulu is in the kitchen, fixing herself some coffee, when Nick enters the house, followed by Shannon. Lulu asks about Burton, then tells Shannon that she’s put out a new toothbrush for her in the bathroom, made up the sofa bed in the den for her, and would Shannon like to try to get a little sleep before school.
Shannon looks imploringly at Lulu and asks “Can’t I stay home today?”
Nick quickly snaps back “No, we’ve got to work.”
Shannon, clearly upset by everything that has happened, asks if Burton is going to die. Nick again jumps in, snaps at her “No, he’ll be fine, just drop it,” and stalks out of the room. Lulu looks after him with and expression of disbelief and distaste for his actions towards Shannon at this moment.
