Another week before we get the final three! The promo for the upcoming trilogy was awesome! So much to wait for: Lulu realizing she doesn't want to marry that jerk, Burton asking Nick to head the firm (which is a surprise given what we saw transpire in tonight's repeat episode), and most interestingly....what's behind that door!!! Can't wait...but we did have last week's really compelling repeat.
We saw the introduction of Lulu and the setup of the tension dynamic between her and Nick. Her emotionality must drive Nick nuts. I have to admit she did seem out of control at times, often to the detriment of her client. But she is so attractive and has a compelling vulnerability that I think draws Nick to her in spite of her out of control emotions. This episode also marks the beginning of the end of Amanda...a lame character (good riddance!)
The power play made by Jake was interesting and ironic since in the episodes that follow (i.e. the securities scandal) Burton basically saves Jake's professional ass from oblivion.
Best of all (of course!) was the dynamic between Burton and Nick! Nick simultaneously looking for approval from Burton as a father and as an employer. In the final scene (very nicely done) Nick gets neither the acknowledgement he craves from Burton as a son and as a capable( i.e. mature) lawyer. Nick telling his father in the scenes prior that Burton didn't embody the qualities Nick felt that he was demanding of him revealed just how hurt and angry Nick is where Burton is concerned. So I guess Nick felt some satisfaction in dropping that bomb ("I've decided to accept that offer") on his father who was expecting Nick to stay put. Nick, I felt, was just trying to hurt his father, more than trying to advance his career. "Business comes first..." I don't think so!!
