Burton wasn't really defending Nick, but you could tell he didn't want Jeremy to say anything more about Anne and the pills.
By the way--in the car, Nick asks Jeremy where he heard about Anne taking pills, and Jeremy replies from his mother.
I like questions in the middle!!! ;D

 and I'm glad to ask those questions!
Ah, was Nick surprised to know and was he curious to ask more... and should I just shut up and wait until the end and then ask you that question? *sheepishly*

Nick sits up straight when Jeremy tells him all this, and gives Jeremy a cold, hard stare. He then tells Jeremy they should go to lunch.
At the Incline, Nick gets Jeremy to tell him how much money he owes the thugs. Jeremy beats around the bush a bit, then finally confesses that it's $6,000, and that if he doesn't come up with the money in a day or two, they're going to make it $7,000. He asks Nick for help. While they're talking, his cell phone rings. It's the bookmakers, but Jeremy refuses to answer the phone. He is clearly distressed--especially when Nick tells him he has got to tell Liz.

Isn't it nice to be able to stay on as long as you like in the US without it affecting the bill!

OOPs! I just realized, I left out a little step . . . Jeremy tells Liz about his problems at school, and Liz becomes more upset. Jeremy runs upstairs, and Liz follows him. Nick wanders over to a shelf and picks up a picture of two teenage girls together. He turns to Burton and says, "This is my mother, isn't it?" Burton tells him it is, and where he thinks it was taken. Then Jeremy comes running downstairs, grabs the keys, and heads out the door. Liz runs down the stairs after him, calling for him to wait . . . Nick goes off after him . . . While their both gone, Burton and Liz talk about how Liz remembers the past (differently from Burton), and how she knows that Burton left Anne. Burton asks her if she knows why he left Anne. He tells her it was because of the pills and Anne's infidelity He then tells her that it got to the point where he couldn't take it, so he left. He tried to get custody of Nick, but the courts were reluctant to give custody to a father back then, so he lost. He then tells how when Anne got sick he took care of her, and she seemed grateful for his help at the end. Finally, he tells her that Nick doesn't know any of this, and he doesn't want him to find out. When she questions why, he tells her that Nick loved his mother very much, and she died, and he (Burton) doesn't want to take away what memories Nick has of her.

Meanwhile, Nick has caught up with Jeremy, who has crashed his mother's car into a tree.
Jeremy is getting out of the car as Nick arrives, and Nick gets him to sit down on the curb while he calls 911. As Jeremy sits there, Nick tells him he's got to straighten himself out as "Let me tell you--nobody cares about your problems. Nobody." (meaning, Nick has been there and learned things the hard way)

See why I love Burton? *heart melts*
:bawling: and I won't see this episode! *sniff* :crying:
Ahh, so Nick's being tough on Jeremy...heh! I mean :bawling: (sorry I just love that icon, its soooo cute!).

The next day, Liz goes in for surgery to try to remove her cancer. Burton has agreed to go with her for moral support.
Back at the office, Nick is working in the conference room, when again Jeremy shows up. This time he's there to ask Nick's help in dealing with his mother's illness.
Nick lays it all out for him in black and white, almost harshly. He tells Jeremy that he has got to straighten himself out and be there for his mother. He tells Jeremy that it won't be fun--she'll be sick (from the chemo), she'll feel ugly, she'll be unhappy, but he's got to be there for her. And if she allows him the greatest honor, by permitting him to be with her when she dies, then he will have been allowed the greatest honor she can give him. (very dramatic, very hard to watch)
Nick then takes Jeremy over to the hospital.
Liz has come out of surgery, and is laying in her room when Burton comes in with some magazines. She's been trying to do some paperwork, but she's too tired. They chat a little, and she dozes off, clearly comforted that Burton is there.
Nick comes in, and Burton tells him how things have gone. Nick then sits down, and they quietly reminisce about Anne, and some things she talked about near the end when her thoughts would ramble. She would talk about a house with various rooms, and would always end with (they say this part together) "a room for Nick." (You would :bawl: Hales!)
Then Jeremy wanders in, clearly uncomfortable at being in a hospital, and they tell him how well things have gone. The ep closes with them all sitting there with her as she sleeps quietly.

Burton is very matter-of-fact about it, but you can hear the concern in his voice when he tells Liz he doesn't want Nick to know. Burton is grand, isn't he!!
