I would like to give credit for this summary to my dear, dear friend Spunkymungbeans. A mere day after receiving her copy of the tape (she's in Australia), she was able to put together this summary for us.
Thanks Spunky!

LSP Lulu is heading a staff meeting. Tells them F&F are hosting an adoption day and gives them some advice on how to liase with the F&F lawyers. After the meeting she calls Nick over and tells him that his Probation Officer called. They are assigning all probationers to do clean up duty in Hazel Park as it has become a hazard and so he will be doing some of his hours there on cleanup crew.
Street Near Park Nick draws up in his car, parks and gets out. He is wearing casual clothes. He walks into Hazel Park which barely deserves the name. It is a concrete nightmare. The superviser gives them instructions on cleanup. While he is talking a teenage boy (about 19) starts talking to Nick, telling him he had represented him a year earlier at LSP and that he had left a message but Nick had never got back to him. It is clear Nick doesn't remember him.
Nearby, a woman gets out of a car. She leaves her baby (about 1 year old) sitting alone in the back. She goes to another car and asks the guy if he has money. She gets in and leans over - its clear she is about to give him a blow job.
Meanwhile, back at the park Nick is placing full garbage bags on the curb when he sees the baby alone in the car. He asks a girl nearby if the kid is hers - she shakes her head. He looks around but can't see who owns the car and baby. He starts to dial his mobile phone.

F&F Nick enters still in his civies. The place is jumping with Adoption Day in full swing. Lulu greets him and they chat briefly before he heads to his office.
Burton calls the Lewickis into his office where they discuss how they plan to adopt a baby. They introduce him to Roz, the birth mother, and explain that she is a cleaner and wants to adopt the baby out as she cannot support the child in her circumstances. She is obviously distraught at the decision, which she concedes was hard to make. She leaves in a hurry as she has to get back to work.
As she is leaving she passes Nick who tells Lulu his wallet is missing. He is going to check his car and if its not there go back to the park to look for it. Roz, still upset and in a hurry trips over a box of files in the corridor and falls, crying out in pain. An ambulance is called.
Hazel Park Nick arrives back at the park in time to see Social Services taking the baby from the car. The mother is being interviewed by Police.
F&F Nick meets Lulu outside Burton's office. He asks her about Lonnie Grandy, the kid from the park. She doesn't remember him either. She kisses him and then gets back to work. Nick goes into Burton's office. Burton asks whether Nick and Lulu are living together now. Nick says 'yes'. Burton tells him he is really pleased. He also tells him about Roz's accident.

Burton's Place Burton and Shannon are having dinner and he is telling Shannon about the Adoption Day. He asks Shannon what she thinks about him adopting her.
Hazel Park The baby's mother is sitting on a park bench when Nick comes along. She asks him where he is from and calls him "Shadyside". Asks if he wants a 'date' for $20 [SMB note: yeah she would really say that - CBS is so puritanical] - Nick walks away. In the Park he is working next to Lonnie. The supervisor gives him grief about not working fast enough and calls him 'Franklin'. When Lonnie comes up Nick tells him he cancelled the cards in the wallet. Lonnie pretends he doesn't know what he is talking about. He tells this hard luck story about what happened when Nick didn't return his call - how he got ripped off on a loan and that this meant he couldn't go to college and stole trying to making the money back and is now on probation instead of in college. He makes it out to be all Nick's fault.
F&F Nick and Burton are in the conference room where Roz's lawyer is explaining her injuries. He and Burton dicker over the settlement until they arrive at $137K. After the lawyer leaves Burton tells Nick he is thinking of adopting Shannon. Nick offers to help but Burton tells him that Lulu is handling it.

LSP Lulu calls Laura Donnellon to her office. She is the mother/prostitute from the Park. They discuss the shelter hearing for her baby. Lulu tells her she won't get custody because of her circumstances. She asks about her family. Laura tells her that her parents are already looking after her son, Tom. Her father heads up a large construction firm, Donnellon Constructions. They won't let her see her son. They don't know about Virginia, the daughter. Laura doesn't appear willing to do anything to get her daughter back. She quotes Tao: "Only desiring you see only the manifestation, not desiring you see the mystery". Lulu does not find this helpful.
Lonnie's Apartment Nick arrives at Lonnie's apartment and knocks. Lonnie answers the door. Nick tells him he has talked to the college about setting up a payment plan so he can continue there. Nick just stands there while Lonnie effusively expresses his gratitude. He says nothing until Lonnie goes back inside and gets his wallet, saying he will repay him. Nick leaves without another word.
Court Suzanne Pell appears for Social Services and Kate Shaw represents the child. Suzanne details Laura's history of prostitution and drug dependance. Laura hasn't put in an appearance at the court. The grandparents have agreed to take in the baby but will not grant access to Laura until she has completed a drug rehabilitation program. The Judge refuses to make a ruling until Laura puts in an appearance. He adjourns the case until the next day.

Street Lulu finds Laura in her car. She tells Lulu she didn't go because she didn't want to see her father. She says she graduated second at college in philosophy and that her refusing to go home wasn't about the drugs, it was becasue she didn't want her father controlling her life. Lulu says she will recommend that the grandparents take custody of the baby and to arrange rehabilitation. She stresses that she has to attend court the next day.
Burton's house Burton is talking to Roy Cantwell. Roy tells him that to woman he was with in Florida ripped him off. Burton says he wants to adopt Shannon and that he could provide her with a better future than Roy could. Roy says he will think about it. Shannon comes in at the end. Her reaction to her father is awkward and chilly.
Hazel Park Nick is painting a wall and Lonnie is working beside him. Lonnie says he has arranged to go back to college but he needs a job to pay the student loan. He asks Nick to help him find a job. He has met a girl and wants to impress her saying he has a job with a future.

F&F Conference Room Roz Kempf and the Lewicki's are there with Burton. Roz's arm is in a sling. She tells the Lewickis that as she now has the money to support and raise the baby she wants the baby back. Mrs Lewicki says that the revocation period has expired and that the court hearing was just a formality. Roz begs for her baby back.
Court Laura is applying for two supervised visits a week. Kate Shaw tells the court that the parents will refuse access to Laura until after her rehabilitation is complete. Laura stands and asks if she can be allowed to go home. The Judge says that they are only there to determine the custody and access arrangements for her daughter. Laura can only visit as ordered and only if she is sober.
F&F Burton's Office Burton is discussing the adoption with the Lewickis. Mrs Lewicki says she knows the only reason Roz was giving up her baby was because she couldn't afford to raise him and now she could afford to look after him she didn't have the heart to take the baby from her. She says she can't take the baby if the mother doesn't want to give him up.
Outside the Court Laura is sitting looking dejected. Lulu comes up to her and says she has talked with Laura's parents and has made a meeting with them for the next day, to discuss Laura returning home. Laura says she will be there.
Judge Damsen's Chambers Roz Kempf, the Lewickis and Burton are at the chambers to discuss the adoption hearing. The Mrs Lewicki indicates that they will not be proceeding with the adoption hearing the next day. Judge Damsen agrees and arranges a shelter hearing for Roz to have her son returned to her care.

F&F Nick's Office Nick returns to find Shannon waiting for him. She wants to know whether he is ok with the adoption and that he isn't jealous. He tells her he is fine with the adoption. It's hard to read what he thinks but he doesn't seem overly enthusiastic.
The Incline Burton and Roy are meeting about Shannon's adoption. Roy Cantwell refuses to sign the adoption papers for Shannon. He says he wants an opportunity for a relationship with her and so is re-establishing himself in Pittsburgh.
F&F Lonnie is waiting for Nick in reception and stops him as he is leaving. He tells him he has a job now at a burger place and so he asks if Nick thinks its a good idea to tell his girlfriend the truth about himself. (He had told her he was a computer technician.) Nick indicates its a good idea, wishes him luck then shows him out.
Burton's Place Burton tells Shannon that her father won't sign the consent forms for the adoption. She is upset that the adoption isn't going to go through and wants Burton to take her father to court.
Hazel Park Lonnie and Nick are painting a wall. Lonnie tells him his girlfriend dumped him when he told her the truth. He is pissed at Nick because Nick said he should. He thinks if he buys her a ring she will see that he is responsible and take him back. Nick tells him not to do that. Lonnie tries to arrange to meet Nick sometime, just to hang out. Nick gives him the brush-off.

LSP Lulu's Office Laura is waiting to see her parents. When Lulu comes in she tells her that she has been through this all before and doesn't want to do it again - to forget it and let everyone go back to the way things were. Lulu tells her she will end up dead if she continues this way. Laura is insistent. She crys, watching through the window, as Lulu tells her parents she won't be coming home after all.
Bank's Offices A bank official is walking along a corridor with Nick, telling him a young man had tried to get a loan from them using Nick's details, and had insisted that he had Nick's permission. They enter an office and Lonnie is there waiting. The bank official asks if they should ring the police.
Street outside the bank Nick and Lonnie exit the bank with Lonnie talking non-stop. He is saying how he would have paid Nick back and he just wanted to money to buy a ring for his ex-girlfriend. Nick is annoyed with him (naturally) and walks off without a word.
Judge Damsen's Court There is a festive air in the corridor outside with balloons everywhere and families waiting to formalise adoptions. Inside the court Burton is reading the adoption decree for the Hendricksons, a white couple who are adopting a lovely little black girl. It is a happy and touching scene and Judge Damsen is smiling as she signs the decree formalising the adoption. Lulu is watching at the back of the court and gives Burton one of the loveliest smiles I have ever seen.
Burton's Place Burton and Shannon are having breakfast. He is reading the paper and she is eating. Its a quiet content scene.

Hazel Park Nick and Lonnie are finished painting the wall. Lonnie tells him his ex-girlfriend still won't talk to him so he's over her and that there are heaps of girls at college. As they stand back admiring their work the supervisor comes along and gives 'Franklin' grief about missing a spot. Lonnie tells the supervisor his friend's name is Fallin not Franklin. Nick is amused.
As Nick is leaving the park he passes Laura who is sleeping on one of the newly painted park benches. She calls out "Hi, Shadyside". She is shivering so Nick picks her blanket up from the ground and places it over her. She says "Its getting cold". She is coughing as he leaves the now clean and repainted Hazel Park.
The End
