Hallway Suzanne asks Lulu point blank why Lulu refuses to accept her apology. Lulu again brings up the fact that Suzanne knew that Lulu and Nick were living together. Suzanne says yes, but that she had no idea about the baby. Lulu says that shouldn’t have anything to do with it. Suzanne says it does, that she has her own son, and that not knowing about the baby, well, she really liked Nick and thought she had a chance with him.

Suzanne’s apartment Nick tries to catch Suzanne at home again, but with no luck. However, this time Kim says there is something Nick can do to help. He shows Nick a pendant on a chain, and explains that his dad gave it to his mom. There used to be a pearl on it, but the pearl has gotten lost. Kim wants to give it to his mother for Valentine’s Day, and wants to know if Nick can get it fixed. Nick takes it with him.

Nick’s house Nick is in his suit in the dining area. Alvin shows up, bringing pizza, which he says is probably cold. Nick tells him to put it in the oven, and then starts making coffee.
Alvin is still going on about Nick saving him, calling him “some kind of angel.” Nick is not pleased.
Alvin then tells Nick about the boy Connor and his racist comments. He says that the father was the same way, and that every day on the bus the dad would sit close to the driver, Cliff, and mutter racial slurs at him.

Jenkins apartment Cliff is out, but the door is opened by Nora, his daughter. Nick can see Cliff’s mother in her sickbed in the other room. Nick asks Nora a couple of questions (after he flashes her a smile!). He asks Nora if anyone on the bus had been mean to her dad. Nora says yes, that a man said bad things to her dad all the time, but her dad had told her not to listen, as those things were bad and shouldn’t be listened to.
As Nick stands to leave (he’s been kneeling at her level), Nora volunteers “His son called me a n* that day. Dad turned and yelled at the man and his son and that’s when it happened.”
LSP Suzanne brings Connor in to see Lulu, saying that Connor is having some problems at the shelter. Once they’re in her office, Lulu tries to get Connor to talk. Finally he says “My dad’s funeral is on Friday, and they’ve got me sharing a room with a bunch of coons.”
F&F, Nick’s office Cliff and Nora Jenkins come by to seen Nick. Cliff says that Nora told him what she told Nick, and that it’s true, he wasn’t looking at the road when the accident happened.
Nick goes over the other details of the crash, and then states that Cliff had earlier told him that there was no way he could have prevented the crash (he hit a patch of ice on the road). Cliff agrees, but says he wasn’t watching the road.
Nick tries to get him to leave that bit out, but Cliff points out that to do so would require Nora to also change her story, and he won’t have her lie for him.

F&F conference room Cliff is making a new statement. He tells about how one day Connor’s father got on and didn’t have the money for the fare, and how when Cliff wouldn’t let him ride because “you seen me before,” the man called him a n*.
He says that every day after that the man would get on the bus, sit as close behind Cliff as he could, and mutter racial slurs at him for the whole trip. Cliff said he just ignored it.
However, on the day of the accident, there was no school, so Nora rode the bus with him. And the man’s son got on with him. He told Nora to ignore the man and his son, but when the boy called Nora a n*, he snapped. He turned around and told the man off, he turned away from his job.

In the hallway afterwards, Burton advises the guy from ACT to suspend Cliff immediately, and for the company to start distancing themselves from Cliff in case the District Attorney wants to press wrongful death charges against him (all things Nick had warned Cliff might happen). Nick listens unhappily.

LSP Suzanne comes to see Lulu again. She’s found another foster family who might be willing to take Connor in, even considering his “attitude.” As Suzanne leaves, Lulu, still in an adversarial mood, calls Alvin in to her office.
She questions him about some pamphlets he left for her, one for Al-Anon and one Co-Dependents Anonymous. She is incensed that he left them. Alvin looks at her placidly and points out that “You are 50% of any relationship you’re in.” She doesn’t throw them in his face, but you can see she is sorely tempted. Instead she thanks him in a hateful tone and pushes him out of her office.
P.S. Alvin isn’t just giving her these pamphlets because of Nick. He tells Nick at some point that Lulu has a lot of issues because her father is an alcoholic, and she obviously watched someone enable him.

Suzanne’s apartment Nick stops by again, this time Suzanne’s home. He tells her he’s sorry for starting something that he wasn’t going to finish. Suzanne accepts this apology.
On his way out, he sees Kim, who asks about the pendant. Nick hands him a box, which the boy opens. He looks at the pendant, which now has a large pearl, then looks up and Nick and says “I forgive you man.” (Obviously Kim is forgiving Nick for hurting his mother the other day, not for the whole affair.)

LSP The foster family is leaving as Connor turns to Lulu and says “It’s not my fault, if they don’t like me. It’s not my fault.”
In the other room, Lulu and Suzanne talk about how Connor doesn’t really stand a chance of finding a foster family. As they go to leave, Lulu asks Suzanne about her son. Suzanne says his name is Kim, and that he’s ten.

Jenkins apartment Nick advises Cliff to find a lawyer. Cliff asks if he means a public defender, but Nick says only if the District Attorney files criminal charges. He gives Cliff a card for LSP and tells him to ask for Louisa Archer, that she’ll help him get started.

Lulu’s house (yes, she’s back there) Nick comes by. At first Lulu doesn’t let him in. When she finally does, Nick shows her the certificate of graduation from the rehab program. She coolly congratulates him, then hands it back.
He asks her about them, but she says she refuses to try. A hurt Nick leaves.

Nick’s house Nick is at the table when Alvin comes in. Alvin sees the certificate and congratulates him. But Alvin again voices concerns at how quickly Nick has finished the 12 steps. He bluntly tells Nick that the acceleration thing is crap, and that Nick has to really deal with his problem, admit there is a problem first.
Nick replies angrily, but Alvin reminds him that he’s been through this, and going faster doesn’t work unless what Nick really wants is for the rest of his life to speed up or disappear.
