Alvin is surprised to see Nick, who wants to talk to him. Alvin explains that he’s about to catch his bus (he rides the bus 3 days a week to cut down on using fossil fuels. Nick comments that he’s thinking about one of those hybrids “when the lease runs out . . .”). The bus stops, the driver asks if Alvin’s riding today, but Alvin, calling both the driver and the driver’s daughter by name, says no.
Nick offers Alvin a ride to work so Nick can talk over step 9 of his 12 steps, making amends. Alvin comments that Nick is moving through the steps awfully fast, but Nick points out that he’s in week 3 of a 30 day program.

LSP Nick stops in to see Lulu, to try to apologize to her, but she just gives him a very cold shoulder. She refuses to talk personal life, stating that she doesn’t think Nick should be handling any cases at LSP until he’s finished his rehab program. Nick, rather than fight, excuses himself.

Out in the lobby, Alvin rushes up and tells Nick that there’s just been a bus crash, that the bus he was supposed to be on has gone over a guardrail. Preoccupied with his own problems, Nick brushes by Alvin and out the door.

F&F Nick is late coming in to a meeting in the conference room. As he joins them, Burton is explaining how Jake is going to be covering much of the case, blah, blah, blah (it’s the Allegheny County T[ransit], or ACT). Nick, seeing the latest news on the television they have on in the room, offers to be the one to go talk to the driver. Burton interrupts, says no, Jake will handle it. Nick doesn’t say anything.

Out in the hallway afterwards, Burton still doesn’t want Nick to talk to the driver, saying he wants Nick to go by the Transit Authority. He says Nick has a lot of important personal things going on right now. Nick says true, but he needs to work, and that he can see the driver after he goes to the Transit Authority. Burton finally agrees.

LSP Suzanne Pell stops by to see Lulu. She explains that she has a client she needs Lulu to handle, a boy named Connor. Connor and his father were both on the bus that crashed. The father was killed, but Connor had only minor injuries. There are only two relatives—an uncle with a history of violence and abuse, and a cousin with a history of neglecting his own children. Lulu agrees to see the client, but not before giving Suzanne the icy treatment.

F&F, Jakes’ office Nick goes to see Jake to make amends. Jake, naturally, wants to talk about the accident and the case. Nick gives him a letter to read, and Jake lays it aside for later. Nick confesses to Jake that he stole the Spar Chemical account from him, and that it’s not in the letter. Jake, shocked and angry, asks if there were any other accounts—Nick gestures to the letter, which Jake hurriedly and angrily rips open.

F&F, Burton’s office Nick tells Burton that he wants to give his credit for a couple of accounts to Jake. Burton looks quizzical at first, but agrees. Nick then apologizes to Burton for letting him down, for believing things of Burton that he now knows Burton didn’t do (leaving Anne, I’m thinking), etc. He also gives Burton a letter, which Burton lays aside.
Before they leave his office (the guy from ACT is there), Burton tells Nick he wants to apologize as well. When Nick asks “What for?” Burton replies, “For whatever the hell I’ve done.”
Courthouse Lulu brings Connor to the courthouse for the shelter hearing. Before they enter Judge Damsen’s courtroom, Suzanne arrives and introduces the Heatons, who happen to be a mixed-race couple.
Once inside the courtroom, Suzanne and Lulu both tell that they think the Heatons will be an excellent placement for Connor. Judge Damsen then turns to Connor and asks his opinion. The sullen youth growls out “I ain’t livin’ with no n*.”
Damsen’s chambers Damsen and Lulu discuss the fact that there is no choice but to leave Connor in the shelter at present. Damsen is very grim throughout, as you might expect.
