F&F Burton comes in the main door, stops at the desk to pick up any messages. He sees Nick in the conference room with a client.
Burton goes in his office to hang up his coat and hat, and Nick joins him. Burton asks if Jake is there. When Nick says no, Burton asks if he knows where Jake is. Nick mutters something about how Jake might be late.
Just then, a bruised and battered Jake arrives. Burton is appalled at his appearance, which Jake explains by saying he was mugged.
Burton explains that Kirkendall, their client, is trying to fire his company manager. He says he’s wanted to get rid of the guy, but last month the manager took a bunch of clients to a strip club and charged it to the company. Kirkendall wants to use this as grounds to fire him. Burton tells Nick that he wants Jake to handle the deal, as Kirkendall is conservative and doesn’t approve of the trouble Nick’s been in.
Burton and Jake go into the conference room to talk to Kirkendall, when a police detective shows up to talk to Jake.

Jake’s office Detective Demaria asks Jake a lot of intense questions about the night before, but Jake sticks to his story of being mugged, making up a tale about how he had had too much to drink and had decided to stop at the motel rather than drive. The detective doesn’t believe him.

Conference room Luke explains to Nick that he wants to live with his father, saying his mother is a whore.
As Nick leaves the conference room and walks past Lulu’s office, Lulu stops him. She thanks him for the flowers, of which Nick pretends to know nothing. When she’s a little nonplussed, Nick grins and admits sending them. She asks how he knew to send lilies, and he reminds her of saying once how when she’s in a bad mood she likes to go to a farmer’s market and buy white lilies. Before he can move on, she asks him to dinner, and he accepts.

Jake’s office Nick, concerned, offers to help Jake out by doing some research on the stuff for Kirkendall. Jake refuses, saying it’s just the pain meds upsetting his stomach. Finally, Nick grabs the folder, emphatically states he’ll have a memo for Jake in the morning, and walks out.
Detective Demaria comes by to see Jake again. He says the motel manager has picked out Attis’ picture and asks Jake to look again. Jake says he doesn’t see the guy. Demaria asks him to come in to look at a line-up, but Jake refuses. Demaria says the guy is a suspect in a number of cases, and they would like to get him for more than credit-card theft.
