Diner Shannon and Burton are having dinner. Shannon is arguing that she wants to stay at Thurman, and that she thinks she can do better if she just tries harder. She says she’s going to re-take a math test the next day, which concerns Burton. He gives her a basic fractions/decimals problem to solve, but she can’t.

Burton’s house, outside Burton goes to get out of the car, but Shannon fusses, wanting to see a movie as he promised. Burton is clearly weary of the arguments, and insists that she get out. She refuses, but he gets out and heads to the door. As this has been happening, you can see two shadows on the window shades of the house.
Burton surprises the burglars, who hit him over the head and flee. Shannon sits in the car the whole time looking distressed and unhappy.

Nick’s house Nick and Shannon come in the kitchen door. Once inside, Nick confronts Shannon about the robbery, asking how Roy knew about the jewelry.
Shannon confesses that she told him, that Roy needed money because of a bad business deal involving a load of makeup that turned out to be in weird colors.
Nick looks at her coldly and tells her to be ready to leave at 7 in the morning.

Hospital Nick tells Burton about Shannon, how she told Roy about the jewelry and then left the door open when they went out. Burton keeps saying that she’s just a child.
Nick asks what it is about her, why it is that Burton needs someone like her in his life right now. He pauses only a second, then tells Burton to call when he needs to be picked up, and leaves.

LSP Nick and Alvin get in the elevator together. Alvin is talking about how he’s spent the morning going around collecting the misprinted flyers that had been put up and how it gave him a great chance to talk to people (clearly Alvin is becoming obsessed).
Once in the office, Lulu tells Nick how incredible Emily is, how’s she’s finished up with this one difficult case, and tells Nick that she’s given Emily a couple of his cases. Nick says fine.
Nick goes in his office and takes a seat. Emily comes in and says she’s there to work, almost as if she expects Nick to leave. She then pulls up a chair and sits at the other side of the desk.

Laurie shows up with Philip, who is wearing a bandage over his ear. She explains that Mrs. O’Roark is suffering from post-partum depression. She tried to hit Philip, and he ran outside in his bare feet to get away from her. She locked the doors on him, and he was picked up later by Children’s Services with frostbite on his face, hands, and feet (you can see the discoloration on his nose and cheeks).

Bar Burton goes back to see Roy. He wants to know how Roy could let Shannon go someplace like Malcolm’s.
Roy defends Malcolm, saying he won’t hurt Shannon because he likes her. Burton is appalled, pointing out that Shannon is only 13.
Roy says that 13 may be a child in Burton’s world, but it’s different in his. He says he met Shannon’s mother when she was 14, and by the time she was 16 she had Shannon. Burton, highly upset with Roy, leaves.
