316 Sparkle
Burton’s house, the kitchen Shannon is sitting at the table, putting on make-up. Burton comes in, they talk a moment, she heads out to school. As soon as she’s gone, Burton goes to the back door to let in two deliverymen who are bringing a new French Provincial-style desk for Shannon’s room. They take it upstairs, but they tell Burton that they can’t finish until the other desk is cleared out. Burton pulls out the drawer to empty it, and a sheaf of pictures which was caught up in the drawer falls out. He looks at them in shock.

Laurie Solt arrives to see Nick. She has brought Philip, a young African-American boy whose foster family no longer wants him. She explains to Nick that his foster mother thinks he’s a danger to her new baby, and she blames him for an accident a few weeks ago in which the baby’s infant seat fell off a table.
Nick talks to Philip, who tells him that he just wanted to kiss the baby yesterday but his foster mother went nuts, accusing him of trying to harm the baby.

Burton’s house, kitchen Shannon is at the refrigerator getting a drink when Burton starts to question her about the photos. She apologizes (for what she doesn’t say), but points out that he wouldn’t let her enter the Miss Teen Pittsburgh pageant. Burton reminds her that he feels she should concentrate on her studies right now, but Shannon tries to tell him that she can handle both, and that a modeling career won’t interfere.
Burton makes her tell him the name of the photographer, and heads out to see him, leaving Shannon apologizing again.

O’Roark’s house Nick is talking with Mrs. O’Roark, and you can hear the baby crying in the background. Mrs. O’Roark, who seems frazzled, says the baby is colicky, and she just can’t deal with both the baby and Philip right now. She also says she doesn’t’ trust Philip around the baby, but won’t say why, only that Heather is her child, she gave birth to her.
Finally, Mr. O’Roark arrives home. Mrs. O’Roark goes to tend to the still-crying baby, and he tells Nick that she claims Philip is dangerous. He doesn’t know why she feels this way, but says that things go crazy after he leaves for work each day.

Malcolm’s Photography Burton goes in to talk to Malcolm. He’s clearly worried, and the appearance of the place, including a box of pill bottles on a table inside the door, doesn’t reassure him. Malcolm says that Roy signed the paperwork, and that he assumed that since Roy is Shannon’s father, he has the authority. Burton grimly says no. Burton insists on seeing Shannon’s photos, and Malcolm goes to get them.
After Burton looks them over, he asks where the others are, the ones he had seen of Shannon in a bathing suit. He tells Malcolm that he wants all the photos and the negatives.

LSP Nick is pouring coffee, and we see Alvin in his office rustling papers. He comes out and shows Nick that there is a typo on the flyers, that they all say “Paid for by Mastersin for City Council.” Nick just grins.
Lulu comes through and introduces Nick to Emily. She explains that Emily works for Kirk & McGee, but is going to volunteer for them a bit. Emily asks Nick about what happened with him coming over to Kirk & McGee, but he brushes off the question.

Just then, Mr. O’Roark arrives with Philip’s things. Nick tells him that the judge has placed Philip in a shelter for now, and that there is little chance of them finding another placement for him. The judge has also ordered counseling for Philip. Mr. O’Roark is obviously very concerned about Philip, who has been with them for two years.

Bar Burton goes by to see Roy. Roy says that Shannon wants more than anything to be a model and that Burton is holding her back. He’s just trying to help her with her dream. Burton brings up the subject of adopting Shannon again, and Roy says he’ll agree to anything for $10,000. A disgusted Burton walks out.

Burton’s house Burton tells Shannon that he’s considering sending her to a different school, New Borders. Shannon becomes upset, saying it’s a school for retards and she won’t go there. Burton, in an effort to calm her down, says they’ll talk about it later, maybe after dinner and a movie.
