LSP Alvin comes in, beaming. He compliments everyone, and tells Lulu that she’s looking radiant. Lulu pulls him aside to question him about a call she just received. Apparently Alvin had told a judge (someone he’d known for years) to “shove it up your ass.” She then goes on to mention Alvin’s tardiness to work, his absences, etc., asking if there is anything she can do to help. Alvin, still not upset at all, says no, and quits. As he leaves, he tells Lulu that she really is looking radiant, by the way.

Nick’s house It’s night, and it’s pouring rain. There’s a knock at the door, which Nick answers. It’s Alvin. Nick mentions that Lulu said he quit, and Alvin says yes, but more importantly, he’s getting married and he wants Nick to be his best man. Not only that, but he’s dying of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Nick is clearly nonplussed at this, but Alvin breezes on, saying he wants to take Nick to Los Angeles for the weekend for a bachelor party, leaving the next day, all expenses on him. Nick tries to tell him he’s got a retreat to attend, but Alvin says he has to go. With this, Alvin leaves.
As the door shuts behind him, Lulu steps into the room, her face full of concern.

F&F Everyone is gathering in the conference room in preparation for leaving for the retreat. Nick comes in, pulls Burton out to talk in private. He says he can’t go on the retreat because he’s got to go to Los Angeles with Alvin. He won’t say why, only that it’s personal and he’ll explain it later. Burton tries to tell him he can’t, even questioning if Nick is allowed to leave the state, but Nick insists.

Pittsburgh Airport Alvin is reading a book about Lou Gehrig. They announce the flight is boarding, and Nick has to try to get Alvin to stop reading and board. Alvin is actually rather excited, as he’s never flown first class before.

LSP A social worker (no name given) comes in to ask Lulu about Tiffany Scovitch. She says Tiffany was expelled from Jane’s Place, the shelter she was in, the night before. Lulu says she thinks Tiffany spent the night there in Alvin’s office.

Hotel, LA Alvin is swimming. He jumps out of the pool, calling, “Cold, cold, cold,” while running to the hot tub, where he jumps in. Nick, meanwhile, is sitting in a chair fully dressed (no suit coat or tie) working on his lap top. Alvin mentions that Nick doesn’t loosen up much, but Nick tells him it’s not personal, it’s just how he is. Alvin makes Nick pack it up, however, saying they have a lot to do, and they head off.

LA Park Alvin and Nick are playing basketball with the locals, and Nick is terrible. Alvin says that this is the park where a lot of great basketball players played, and Nick tries to explain that he’s not much good at team sports. After their game, Nick wants to go back to the hotel and make some calls, but Alvin wants to run down to the beach and swim. A bemused Nick watches as Alvin shucks off his clothes, and clad only in boxers, runs into the surf.

Retreat Center Burton is sitting up in his twin bed reading. Jake comes out of the bathroom, asks if it’s okay that they leave the bathroom light on, it being a strange place and all. Burton agrees. After Jake is snugly in his own twin bed, he asks about Nick. Burton says he’s fine, that he had to go to LA on for personal reasons.
