LA Restaurant Alvin and Nick are having dinner, and Alvin is enjoying everything with great gusto while keeping an eye open for celebrities. Out of the blue, Alvin asks Nick what he thinks about healers, if they can help. Nick is skeptical. Alvin suddenly recognizes Erik Estrada and calls across the restaurant to him.

LSP Lulu comes in to find Tiffany there again. She gets Tiffany to sit down and talk to her this time, and Tiffany explains what happened with Jane’s Place. She met this boy who goes to a private school (his dad’s a doctor), and they started going out. She didn’t tell him about the shelter, not knowing how he would act, and so had him drop her off in front of a house in Shadyside. She said she missed curfew too many times because of this, and got kicked out.
Lulu reminds her that there is an attachment order, meaning that she now has to go to juvenile hall, but Tiffany asks for help, as Clint has asked her to a dance. She’s never been to a real dance before, and she really wants to go.

Retreat Center Empathy exercise The leader has Burton and Jake sitting in the middle of the room. They try a couple of sample situations (how would Burton act if Jake said he wasn’t going to be able to finish a job, etc.) and as expected, Burton is rather weak in the empathy department. Finally, Jake comes out and says that that’s just how Burton is. Burton is shocked at this, saying he’s always tried to treat everyone the same. Jake says that this may be what he thinks, but he always favors Nick, such as letting him go off to LA instead of coming to the retreat.

LA Nick and Alvin have just had breakfast. Nick is more casual this time, wearing a red t-shirt and what could be black jeans. Alvin confesses to Nick that the real reason he came to LA is to meet with a Chinese doctor he has heard about online. He tells Nick they can meet up later after his appointment, but Nick insists on coming along.

Lulu’s house Lulu is sitting in the living room reading, when Tiffany comes down the stairs. She’s wearing a rather ill-fitting pink dress. Lulu looks her over and says she might have some things to help, and they go back upstairs.

Cab, outside the house Alvin explains that the boy’s mother and he never married. He’s only seen the boy once, when he was 7, and he should be in high school now. He wonders if he should go up to the door, and Nick says yes, he should. Alvin gets out and goes to the door, leaving Nick in the cab. Alvin rings the doorbell, and a woman answers, letting him in.

A short while later, Alvin emerges from the house. Nick is leaning against the side of the cab. He comments that the visit didn’t take long, and Alvin tells him that the boy didn’t want to see him, wouldn’t even come out of his room.

Lulu’s house Tiffany’s date has arrived. Tiffany comes down the stairs again, this time in a much more flattering black dress of Lulu’s. Lulu reminds her to be home by midnight or she’ll have to call the police. As she leaves, Tiffany thanks her.

LA Hotel Nick comes into the suite after a swim, saying that Alvin failed to tell him the pool was heated. He seems much more relaxed. Alvin, to the contrary, seems tense and is packing. When Nick questions him, he says that there’s a 10 pm flight back and he’s going.
Nick is flummoxed, saying they can’t leave, as he’s bought them court-side seats for the night’s Lakers game. Alvin looks at the tickets and is shocked to see Nick payed $1,900 per ticket. He tells Nick to try to return them, he’s just not in the mood. Nick finally gets him to agree to stay the second night, agreeing that they’ll just have dinner. A despondent Alvin then goes to take a walk.

Retreat Center Jake and Burton are in their respective twin beds. Jake apologizes for what he said in the empathy training, but admits that he doesn’t feel the playing field is level. He says that he bills more hours, brings in more clients, and no matter what, Nick is always above him. He says that he knows Burton is planning a change and that Nick is the heir apparent.
When Burton replies that that’s not necessarily true, Jake asks that he be considered for the job.

Lulu’s house Tiffany has returned early, and is soaked (it’s been raining all weekend). She talks glowingly about the dance until she gets to the part where she told Clint about Jane’s Place and being a prostitute and everything. She said he stopped talking to her and called her a whore, so she left and walked home. She tries to change the subject to Lulu’s pregnancy, wanting to know if it’s a boy or a girl.

Beach Nick goes looking for Alvin and finds him sitting on the beach in the dark. Alvin has been trying to come to terms with his illness. Nick listens as Alvin talks. Alvin says he was thinking about seeing how far west he could swim, but didn’t know if he had the strength. Nick asks about Victoria, Alvin’s fiancé, and Alvin says she’ll leave, or she should, once she finds out about the illness. As they sit there, Alvin tells Nick he doesn’t have to stay there with him, but Nick does.
