The Innocent and the damned.....
Very interesting episode tonight, and I'll start with Mrs. Olsen. Watching Lulu postpone the inevitable ending of her client's marriage was a great irony! I'm not sure what she's waiting for, with respect to ending her own marriage. Her client (you've to feel bad for the guy...twenty years in prison for a crime you didn't commit only to emerge from prison as damaged goods) made two references to the lack of pictures on her desk of the Cad, but I'm uncertain as to whether she has left him. I guess we'll find out soon enough if she and the Cad are still living together (but we know that she doesn't mind giving his ties away!). But, Nick said it best: "Brian who?!"
So Nick is urging Mrs. Olsen to get a divorce! She ought to take that advice! The scene outside LSP was a good one, if too brief. It was fun seeing Mrs. Olsen thanking Nick for being protective (which he was--a man's natural instinct!) and even more fun was watching Nick deny it! I think that Nick is very wary of giving any more of himself to her until she makes a move that indicates to him that she really wants him. He's already told her (more than once) that he wants to be with her and now Nick is wisely waiting for her to do same. Though who knows how long Nick can hold out? He's got it bad for this woman! Very protective--I mean concerned--of him to offer her his coat so she wouldn't freeze outside!
Nick's case at LSP really made him think tonight. God? Heaven & Hell? That's heavy stuff for Nick! So was Nick just acting in his client's best interests or was his heart involved in this one? I'm betting that we'll see more of this sort of ambiguity. From the clues left for us in the closing scene I guess we are to assume that the daughter of the diabetic drug addict watched her father die, and what's more didn't give him the medical help that we know she knew how to give him. Here we have another innocent who was damaged by events beyond her control. I don't know if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but I could have sworn that Nick had something approaching a smile (smirk?) on his face when he and Jake ducked into the car at the end of the show. It was just a split second...what did you see?
Only a very brief scene with Dabney tonight...too bad. But the scene was very telling. I think that Nick took exception to his father's attitude regarding the "bum" client from LSP. This could be a sign of the tension to come for father & son on how they each view clients. Clearly, Burton didn't think that the bum was an appropriate client for the firm, and even Jake wanted out of it because it "wasn't worth his time". But Nick had a different take. But again the question is whether his attitude is driven by a sense of compassion or is he just being a good lawyer who is only concerned with the best interests of his client and nothing more?
Tonight we saw that The Innocent, when pushed to the edge, become the damned.
Overall, a good episode.
