Here's to The Next Life...
This was the perfect Guardian episode! Hollander promised that from the fourth episode onward we would get a whole new show that was entirely his vision. And now that he has wrapped up virtually all of last season's loose ends, we'll see if he can continue to deliver the goods!
This episode had everything: a compelling case at F&F (love that new name!), an interesting and amusing case for Nick at LSoP, and even a strong case for Lulu (that shows that she actually is a competent lawyer). The only thing that could have made it better would have been a scene between Nick & Lulu, but, hey, at least we didn't have to suffer through any Nick & Kim scenes!
It's great to see Nick back under the guidance of Burton again. Nick may be the smartest lawyer around, but he still has a few things to learn from his Pops. Hollander is setting up a great new dynamic between father and son. We now have Burton trusting and respecting Nick more (the managing partner offer was a surprise but it should be interesting to see how Nick handles the stress of having to make decisions on this level), coupled with Nick still learning at his father's knee (so to speak). We're in for some very interesting times at F&F.
The decision to have each episode be self-contained is a wise one. Dramatically, the show is tighter and faster paced when the cases come to a conclusion at the end of the hour. But in this one we're left wondering whether the nurse was a psychopathic killer or some sort of misguided angel of mercy, which made it all the more interesting.
Love that James is now back at LSoP! James is a very angry man and it should be interesting to see where all of this anger is coming from. I'm not so sure about his judgement showing up at work in basketball clothes?!! Could that woman he was trying to help pop up later as a love interest for James? I hope so. But there is one love interest I'm not keen on seeing developed: Alvin & Laurie. They just don't work. Besides, professionally it isn't the wisest move for them to become involved since they often work so closely together.
Lulu was wonderful in this episode. She showed some professional strength, and although still emotional she was still in control and effective. I know many fans were critical of her character because she seemed too emotional at work and seemed to border on being incompetent, but Hollander seems to be working on correcting that.
Nick's case at LSoP was the best we've seen him take on in a long time! It was poignant and funny ("do you have a shirt or a sweater or something?") at the same time. It's always fun to watch Nick struggle with his obvious empathy for these kids and his own desire to keep his emotions in check. "The very human desire to have parents" that line that Nick delivered in court on the boy's behalf really sums up one of Nick's biggest personal demons. Things may be going well between Nick and Burton right now, but Nick still doesn't know the truth about what happened between his mom and dad and there are so many unresolved emotions there...should make for great scenes down the line between Burton & son!
The Next Life is a good one, and I'm looking forward to more of it!
