The Dead tell tales....
I have only one word to describe this episode....fantastic!! After some inconsistent Testimony, and a very weak Monster we get a great raising of The Dead!
So let's start with Burton, who really was the star of this episode. Dabney gave us another fine performance. His scenes with Mary and even Shannon ("you're too old for sex") were well done. It might even be nice to see Burton with a love interest. Monster gave us next to no Burton and the episode suffered for it. I say the more Burton the better! There's so much more to his character than we were lead to believe last season, and it's going to be very interesting watching his character unfold.
So happy to see an end to this judgeship plot point. Hollander wisely put that to rest and has put Burton back with his boy, Nick (Fallin & Straka never would have worked anyway). Looking forward to the new Fallin & Fallin! The scenes between Nick and Burton are on a whole new level this season. We finally get to see some other aspects of the father son relationship. There really isn't anything that these two won't do for each other. I just hope their relationship doesn't lose its edge.
Despite all the great Burton scenes, the best scene of the episode had to be a very sullen Lulu looking very much alone in bed with her loser husband. That pathetic look on her face is worth a million rewinds! It was so much fun watching her squirm while sitting across from Nick & Kim over dinner! When she practically started begging them to stay for another drink just to prevent another sex romp between Nick & Kim (more on that in a bit) I was laughing out loud! Of course she brought this all on herself and deserves to feel as awful as she obviously does. Nice to see Nick completely ignore her! And Nick's retort to Brian (you're asking about legal dating?!) was perfect!
As for Nick & Kim, I hope Hollander spares us another scene with these two having sex. The scenes between those two are so bad, forget chemistry (because there isn't any) I'd settle for even a little sizzle, but there's nothing --it's just flat! Her fondling Nick in the restaurant was lame. If this was meant to be erotic, the scene missed by a mile. The sooner these two are history the better!
Mitchell (the poster boy for sleazy desperation) could have caused a bit more trouble. I was hoping to see him become completely unhinged and really cause some big trouble. But again, Hollander was in a rush to resolve the storyline and short changed us I think.
Alvin and James? Who knows, but there is a ton of unresolved anger there and I hope that Alvin is able to convince James to come back to work for him.
So, Nick & Lulu have some very interesting times ahead of them. Perhaps a few more double dates with Nick and whomever, will clue Brian in on the fact that his wife is in love with another man. I hope he eventually leaves Lulu, either that or he dies in some horrific accident!
Overall, a very good episode.
