Nick and Jake. Ok I understand that they are rivals at the firm, but Nick needs a friend or at least co-conspirator. In past episodes we have seen friendish behavior, but they don't seem to actually be friends. I think they realize they need each other but are to manly to admit it. I'm hoping this whole Burton leaving thing will bring them together. I'm putting some examples of the almost friend behavior. I guess what I'm getting at is I think they should be friends, plus Nick is gonna be having problems with Burton and Lulu he could surely use someone to trust. I know Nick "Doesn't need anyone" but I would still like to see him have a friend (since Hollander hasn't called me) I nominate Jake.
The Funnies- When Jake is saying he feels bad about suing the nun, Nick reminds him it's only business.
Feeding Frenzy-Jake hit the guy and Nick attempts to comfort him by telling him his dad is gonna cover is own ass and not to take it personal. He even semi offers support with the whole last year I didn't know what was gonna happen comment.
Men from the Boys- Jake tells Nick he's pissed about making Amanda 1st chair.
Causality- Nick calls Jake to go to a hockey game. Sure he was probably looking for anyone to keep him company, but he called Jake.
Privilege- Jake openly asks what's the deal with Nick and Burton.
Shelter- Jake tells Nick his people skills suck and proposes they team up. Later he tells Nick about the other company with the plane, and helps fix that mess.
Many episodes- Jake asks Nick's advice on ladies. They kid around together.
Just for the record I think Bart would make a great best friend, but I think a human pal would be nice. Any ideas on getting Nick an actual human friend?
Sorry for the long post

I dunno. While it would be good for Nick to have a human friend .. Jake is more of a work friend. I don't know if it'll ever go beyond what it has already been. And Nick's not exactly one for making the extra effort.
But I agree that he could really use some human friendship ...

How about James ?
We don't get to see much interaction between the two, these days, though .. :uhoh2:

At the beginning of the series I thought that there would be a great deal of James/Nick interaction because of the contrast between them. But they hardly ever share any screen time at all. James remains a vastly underdeveloped character.
I also nominate Jake as Nick's best friend. They've both screwed up big time so much this season that they would seem to have pretty much in common! Maybe Nick doesn't trust Jake because he senses that there is a fair bit of envy towards him and half expects a stab in the back? Just a thought.

I agree with you that James is a vastly underdeveloped character. And to be perfectly honest, after the "I just sued a nun" scene in The Funnies, I would rather expect the three guys--Nick, James, and Jake--to form a bit of a closer bond. You know, meet up at the Incline sometimes or something.
Maybe that is in the works for next season?

After last night's ep, I'm not thinking Jake's going to be in the front of the line on this one.

Wow! Jake really surprised me this episode (and not in a good way). I would have at least expected him to go to Nick and say hey since your busy, Bitchell is gonna help me on the Meyers deal. That was just unprofessional not to mention backstabby. I was glad when Nick said the whole "No hard feelings" after he took back HIS client. Jake jumped ship waaaayyyy to soon, Nick isn't about to just rollover and take this crap from a couple of politicians. Nick may not be Mr. Friendly but he is absolutely resourceful and effective. Jake totally screwed up and I won't feel sorry for him when Nick takes the firm back and leaves him in the cold. Jake was a decent lawyer, but after the whole SEC debacle he is on shaky ground so I can understand him trying to suck up to the new boss, but come on the name on the door reads Fallen. Anyway Jake is so off my potential friend list.

Yes, it seemed a really dumb thing to do. You don't back-stab the boss's son.
I think Jake is so jealous of Nick that it sometimes clouds his judgement. I didn't think Nick seemed as trusting of him since Causality and now I think Jake has really blown it.

I too was surprised at Jake. He could have handled things differently. NF might even have given him a heads up about watching his back with the folically challenged new guy. I would like to see the look on Jake's face when he finds out that Mitchell was FIRED, thanks to NF. I can't relate JS & NF's previous relationship in too many of the previous eps since I missed most of them.

I also believe that James is a vastly undeveloped character. From the first few episodes, it appeared that James was going to be an influential character in the show, thought it turns out he isn't. It seems that the writers are only using him to fill the gap in some episodes, where they need something else to pad the episode out. He really needs some more screen time so for the viewers to see the type of character he really is.

I agree. I thought he was there as a contrast to Nick - rich white - poor black - but this never seemed to eventuate. He was left to wither on the vine with irrelevant sub-plots. It was a real pity.
I have to admit I liked the Levi subplot, though.
I hope he isn't gone for good.

I vote for James as a friend. I think they can learn from each other and in some respects they represent the two worlds presented in this show.

I think James is going to be too wrapped up in dealing with Levi to be Nick's friend anytime soon. I also think James may be a little too jealous of Nick's easy success. Also when Alvin isn't overseeing the relationship (as in Lolita?) James caves as easily as Jake when Nick asserts control. I think they can get along, but I don't see the basis for a solid friendship. I wish they had gotten Nick involved with the Nick-James storyline earlier. It has a lot of potential, but it gets lost when Nick isn't directly involved. I just wish I could envision a happy ending, to the James-Levi storyline, but I cant zakat

All the "supporting" actors are outstanding and talented. Usually shows "fill-in" with average actors. It's hard to figure out what the producers, writers, etc. were thinking. If the Fallins were the two main characters, why would they need the Grade A actors for background? They are so under utilized. I know steady work as an actor is hard to get, but it would kill me if I didn't have more to do than some of them on this show.
James, I believe will be devestated this year, because I agree -- I don't see Levi coming out of the "center" as he went in, if he comes out at all.... Maybe this will give James an opportunity to work at NF's new firm if there is one or go to work at Fallin. A lot of firm's have someone in charge of the pro bono work and James could oversee this for the firm.
In a round about way I was getting to the friend for Nick thing. I don't see that any story lines have been laid for friend ships with people who are already on TG. The two best possibilities are James and Jake.
Of course, there is always Lulu who just wants to be Nick's friend and share Swan "poop" and other wedding planning stories with him. ;D

Yeah, the two best possibilities for friends for Nick are James and Jake. I think that James would be a good, strong willed character for Nick to look up to, whereas Jake could sometimes lead him astray with his lack of organisation and confidence. I don't think that I would like to see Nick and Lulu as just friends, I believe that they should either be together in love or totally apart.
