I agree with those of you who would like to see James become a good friend of Nicks. It wouldn't be hard to write them into a great friendship.
I think Jake is manipulative and just wants to look out for himself. I couldn't trust him enough to become friends with him.
Nick's character needs a solid friendship with a male to be interesting. If the series had started out with Alvin being a very strong character, he could have become Nick's mentor. He needs dialogue with teeth in it, not just a bunch of 3 word sentences to fill time till the commercial comes on.

She wants to be more than that. She is just to lilly-livered to follow through.

And now Lulu can't be more than friends since she has married Brian... She blew it.

Annie said....."LuLu can't be more than friends since she has married Brian."
BUT are we sure of that???
No, I think Lulu has to be just a love interest and I still vote for James. It certainly shouldn't be the Senator and his chrome dome sidekick (Forgot their names.)
How about introducing someone new at the beginning of S2 to see if there could be a connection with Nick. I still think it should be a male friend.

Perhaps, they can introduce a character from Nick's past -- say a college/school friend. They could enter his life as a new client, or as opposing council. That way there is already an established relationship that can be picked up. No time wasted getting to know each other. Since the coming season will focus on the "father needing the son" I don't know that NF will have time for friends, whether he needs one or not. I like James too. PS Babe. I was born in Maine ;D

Hollander deliberately created a cycle, by ending the season at 'The Beginning' and Nick appears to be digging himself deeper and deeper with each crises. If Nick doesn't get a friend at some point next season, it will be stretching credulity that he lives through it. He nearly got killed this time. How many more times can Nick cheat serious injury or death? Or are we going to end next season with Nicky seriously injured and barely clinging to life? I honestly don't know if I could watch At least James could give Nick some boxing lessons.

How do we know that next season will focus on "father needs son"? They didn't ask me!! I want it to focus on "Nick needs Lulu".

Hollander mentioned it in one of the interviews, unfortunately I've forgotten which one. It was probably one with Rob Owen at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette www.post-gazette.com/try the search using ' Hollander and Guardian '. They're worth reading anyways. Given how much Lulu and Nick we had this season when it was supposed to be about 'a son needing a father' I'm certain we'll get plenty of Nick-LuLu interaction. 'How a man needs a wife' may have to wait for season 3 or 4 .

Darn my whole reply flew into cyberspace. ONE MORE TIME.... Annie you were born in Maine. I knew there was something I liked about you. ;D Where are you now, if I may ask? Zakat, thanks for the heads-up on the Hollander interviews. I have to catch up to all these well informed gals on this site. I still think James could make an excellent friend to Nick. I'm always afraid with all the problems the writers toss at him that he'll fall back on his old habit. BTW can anyone tell me why James kept refusing to go to Parenting Classes? Is it because the episode would have gone too smoothly if he had?

So this brings a few thoughts to my mind: 1) I think James believes whole heartedly in his approach to handling Levi and I think he believes that A/L are meddling in something they really don't understand. James has been around THIS block a few times and knows what is best for the likes of his nephew.
2)With James gone and Alvin at "wits' end" I think it would be interesting to make Lulu the new Director. Interesting storyline for our Nick.

I don't think James is gone for good. He is after all one of the main stars in the show (and one of my favorites). Lulu is already Nick's boss isn't she? Are we interested in improving Alvin's storyline? I'm real happy with the amount of air time he's had in season 1. He reminds me too much of those touch, feelly do gooders who reigned supreme in the 60's. Ahh got that of my chest!

Well this is the reason I think Alvin's character has to be scrapped. In the promotional material he was always described as liberal but realist. If you watch him in the first 6 eps, he is most definately NOT touchy feely, - he yells at Nick, is as stiff as a board in bed with the socialite, and tells Nick to simply stuff Hunter in with the grandparents and move on. The character then pratically disappears for 3 quarters of the season only to re-emerge as Mr. Touchy-Feely and Mr '12-step control freak'. That fact that he didn't start out that way has all but been forgotten. It's pointless to now go back and explain that because no one remembers and more importantly, no one is interested.
Just get rid of Alvin, make LuLu head of Legal Services, the number of permanent cast members is too high for a show where the main character spends so much time with the guest stars.
I think James is going to show up at one of the corporate law firms (probably C&A) working alongside Jake.

Very interesting thoughts. I think James would probably be eaten alive at a big corporate law firm unless he had a mentor.....maybe Nick?? I could handle scrapping Alvin......he's not my favorite BUT I don't think Lulu has the emotional tools to run Childrens Services.....She can't even figure out who she loves and run her own life. Can we have Nick just stand in front of the camera for 40 minutes??? That would be OK with me!!!

Okay this is OT Wouldn't it be neat to steal the 24 idea for an episode, but do an honest 44 minutes? Something very down to earth- no tv wisardry and include all those annoying/embarassing aspects of human behavior that 24 tended to gloss over. Simon could do it!!!! The title could be- 'New York Minute' ;D

Great concept! Simon could definitely bring credence to that show and one-up that KS. A NY Minute could be the best TG ep for 2003. The sad part is that the viewers still won't get it. Where is the 18-49 and why are they paying attention to 24 and KS??
