From the first knock at the door at midnight to the poignant embrace, what a travel for Nick and Lulu! From despair to hope, from mistrust to trust, from doubt to acceptance, from alone and separate to together...
All is not mended but this couple will probably survive because this first chapter of their life as parents, after an apparently failed prologue as a couple, brought them to an upper level.
In this episode, we saw why Lulu is so good for Nick. I know some people think that she never did anything for Nick. But, outside the fact that I don’t agree with the concept of having to be useful to be loved, I think Lulu makes Nick a better human being. She melted his heart, and now makes him able to connect with his emotions and brings out the compassion he probably didn’t know he was able of until her and LSP. And now, gift of the gifts, she makes him a father, something he obviously wants more than anything else. I was so moved when he told her that, despite the baby’s imperfections, he wanted to be a father!
Nick’s encounter with Mark was pivotal. He spoke to him in his usual manner, like he does with all his young clients : with respect and empathy and without condescension. How gifted Nick Fallin/Simon Baker is with kids! And his interaction with Mark clearly contributed to Lulu’s change of mind.
The final embrace was one of the most touching moment I ever saw on TV. Its simplicity, its sobriety made it even more powerful. It reminded me, of course, of their first kiss and convinced me that this TV couple is one of the most stirring I ever saw. Will they be able to go through the other trials they’ll meet for sure? Perhaps with some difficulties, but, IMO, they will. They emerge victorious from this terrible test – learning your baby will be seriously disabled – that kills many couples in real life.
Speaking of tests, the story with Jake was also very powerful. Tests are wonderful … when they confirm your good health. But when they don’t, it is a nightmare that Lulu understood very well. In that scene of a few seconds beside the elevator, we saw the whole Lulu : she quickly put back the armour when she thought Jake was implying that she betrayed him then, when she understood his fears, her compassion came back in a second, her heart on her sleeve.
The writers did an excellent job : the subjects – disabilities, tests - were broached with intelligence and not superficially. I despise CSB for their lack of support for TG but I have to thank them for giving me the best hour on TV.
