The very long hiatus woke up, in me, the need to write some fic but doing so and seeing in what direction my brain and fingers are sending me, some other thoughts came to my mind.
Is there a future for The Guardian?
The show was based on this concept of a young lawyer, rich and sleek, who’s been ordered some community service by the court. The story was the blending of two different worlds, one, his true world, of corporate law and the other, unknown to him until then, of legal aid for children. In the background, there was also the father/son relationship, rocky, full of angst and generational conflicts.
Now, the community service is almost over. And the hours devoted to the children’s cases have changed Nicholas Fallin, deeper than what he (and we )could have thought when he started his practice with LSP. He also met Lulu, an encounter who also contributed to his transformation.
Three years later, are the premises still valuable?
His work with LSP has always been, IMO, one of the most interesting part of TG. I’m convinced that the quality Nick Fallin/Simon Baker was able to give to his interactions with the kids was part of the appeal. I love those stories and the fact that the casting was always extraordinary. We didn’t only see cute children but many times, these kids were ordinary, sometimes fat or unattractive. All were credible and my heart went to them each time. Now that the community service is over, would Nick be able to continue this work? Would he even be interested? To justify another season, we need a yes here.
His relationship with his father is quite stalled. Sometimes, they seem to connect but most of the time, old habits prevent them from doing it. IMO, at 34 years old, Nick should accept that it will always be like this and make the decision to accommodate himself with his father’s personality which isn’t going to change. This relationship could stay in the background of a 4th season, but couldn’t be the main thread.
Lulu’s arrival has been largely discussed. Her character has split the viewers in two camps : the Nick& Lulu friends and the Lulu haters. I am one of the N&L fans and even if I’ve been bothered many times by the way the writers chose to portray her, I root for this couple because at their age, the most difficult is not to fall in love but to stay in love. The writers chose to give them a DS baby, which is very courageous. But I also fear that they were trying to put a term to The Guardian. Because continuing would mean to address the evolution of this child, which I’m not sure CBS would want to do.
Lulu and Nick are ready to be together, and they should. I am not interested by teenagers' love life, when you change your girlfriend/boyfriend as soon as you feel like it. Staying with Lulu is also a proof of Nick’s new maturity. He is ready to be a father and I’m glad he is given the opportunity. But could there be another season after «They married and lived forever happily together» of our childhood fairy tales? Is there potential viewers for a story dealing with a family story? There was, a few years ago, Life goes on, a Sunday night TV show where these issues were confronted. And I liked it very much. Could it be done again? Why not?
I love that show so much! Nick Fallin is a complex character, Simon Baker is a wonderful actor and the whole cast is amazing. There is a lot of potential with Jake, LSP’s cases, with Nick's becoming a mature man, a better person and a father; there are many ways to give a new breath to the show.
That’s where I am, in the first third of the hiatus, shaking these thoughts and putting in a fic where I want it to go. I just hope my wishful thinking will give some results.
