Sorrow. Tristesse. Tristeza. This is what I feel today. Because TG is over for the year or, worse, maybe forever. But those were also my feelings when I watched Antartica. So heart wrenching!
While Nick was sitting in his office, at the beginning, the atmosphere was heavy, the camera work emphasizing the sadness of the departure. The page was turning, not really by choice, like it is in real life most of the time. We knew right away that Antartica would not be a joyful trip.
In fact, it proved again to be a bittersweet episode, a Guardian’s trademark. With despair, sadness and bits of hope.
“You are a better man than you think you are!”- This is the true legacy from Alvin to Nick who has been listening and learning during these three years. Alvin leaves on a defeat and even if he says it doesn’t matter, it does. The beautiful bridges of Pittsburgh were last night quite sinister. And the bright sun was a hard contrast with Alvin’s mood.
Burton and Nick hugging? It was for real! It was a relief, needed to endure Jake’s attitude. When Jake touched Nick on the sleeve, I couldn’t help myself from expressing my distaste. Beurk! Poor Nick ! Burton’s interactions with Nick were a soothing balm for the son. A fourth season could put them together outside the workplace and it would be very interesting. Sunday dinners. Hum!
Now, if I may, I’d like to have a few words with Lulu in private.
My dear Lulu. Do you know how much hope and faith I put in your relationship with Nick? When you told him you didn’t want his name, I felt betrayed! I guess the counselling session wasn’t very helpful!
How can you not see how good he is for you and how good you are for him? He is good for you because he won’t abandon you like your parents did. He will stick around, no matter what. And he can understand how vulnerable you are and help you understand the emotions that sometimes blind you. On the other hand, you were the one to crack up the walls he had erected around him and in which he was prisoner. Now, he had opened up, he became vulnerable but also able to love. To love you and his baby, your daughter. Don’t let him down. You will need him, his love, his principles, his capacity to act accordingly, as Laurie once said “to follow through”, for yourself, and for your daughter.
Fortunately, you were wise enough to understand that naming your daughter Anne was probably as important to him as giving her the Fallin name. Grandpa will be happy with this first name and he might forgive you for the family name... Don’t let him down too. Like Nick, Burton is craving a family life.
Which brings me to the sweet parts. How can I not be in love with the father Nick is and will be? When Lulu gave him Anne, he was beaming and so was she. A great, great moment.
And I cheered when Nick stepped in for Alvin to argue in favour of LSP. The heartfelt speech he gave skillfully was his tribute to his mentor. Nick won’t stay with a 51,000$ salary ( a joke!) but he could help making the transition from a weak but useful clinic to a successful and even more useful clinic.
A fourth season would be a challenge and with his talent, DH could make it work in a totally different direction. Antartica opened many doors that a large audience wants to explore with him. Quality TV should be a matter of principles. Let’s hope CBS understands that.
