The Neighborhood
A Park It’s morning, a runner is running along a paved path through a park.
LSP Lulu is in the main area, asking someone if there is any word on Sarah and Robert Twain. They have an appointment that morning to meet with the adoption agency about the adoption of a little girl, but they haven’t shown up yet, and the adoption people are already there and waiting. The woman says no, and Lulu goes to talk to Alvin.

Nick breezes into LSP, heading for his office. As he enters it, he sees a man about his age, who says in a slightly slurred speech “I’m gonna need a lawyer.” Nick asks him who he is, and the man, clearly retarded, repeats, “I’m gonna need a lawyer.” Nick heads off to find out who this guy is.

Lulu asks Alvin if he can talk to the adoption people, “baby-sit” them while she runs over to the Twain house to see what’s keeping them. As Alvin is agreeing, Nick barges in, asking why there is a retarded man in his office. Alvin breaks off his conversation with Lulu long enough to say “I thought you knew Hugh. . . he works here sometimes like you do.”
Nick, clearly not amused, sarcastically replies “You mean he’s a lawyer?”
Alvin says no, and explains that Hugh helps out sometimes, lifting heavy boxes and things. He explains that whenever Hugh needs legal help, LSP helps him out. He hands Nick the file on Hugh, explaining that Hugh’s dog bit a policeman and has been put in the pound. As Nick looks at the file, he sees Hugh’s last name and says, “Hey, I do know him.”
“So you have seen him around her,” replies Alvin.
“No, we grew up together,” Nick answers, and returns to his office.

As Lulu gets ready to go over to the Twains’, the phone rings. It is Sarah Twain, calling to tell her that Jennifer, their oldest daughter, is missing.
The Park The runner is cutting across a lawn. He approaches some bushes, and we see some bright clothing in the bushes. Cut to the opening credits.

LSP In his office, Nick goes over to see Hugh and asks if Hugh remembers him. When Hugh doesn’t at first, Nick reminds him, “Nick from down the street. On Parker Street.”
Naturally Hugh remembers Nick, but says, “Nick was little” and rode a blue Schwinn Spider bicycle. Nick says yes, that was a long time ago, but we’ve grown up now. Hugh asks where the bike is. Nick just smiles, and Hugh starts repeating how he’s “gonna need a lawyer.” Nick explains that he’s a lawyer now, and he’s going to help Hugh.
Hugh explains that his dog, Beth, bit a police officer and is in the pound.

The Twain house Lulu rushes over to the Twain house. Sarah meets her at the door, almost in tears. Before Lulu can enter, Sarah tells her that they’ve found Jennifer, and that she’s dead.
Inside, the Twains’ younger daughter, Michelle, though distraught about her sister, is very glad to see Lulu. Robert Twain, Sarah’s husband, takes the protesting Michelle upstairs so that Sarah and Lulu can talk.

F&F Burton calls Jake into his office. Jake goes in, prepared to discuss business, but Burton wants to know about Nick’s friends, and asks if Jake can get him a list of who Nick would invite to a party. Jake says it will take a little time, but he’ll get it.

The Pound At the pound, Nick talks to the dog warden about Hugh’s dog Beth. The warden explains that Beth is in fairly good health except for an infected ear, and that Hugh slept outside the pound last night because they wouldn’t let him stay inside with the dog. Hugh is also upset because they won’t let him into the cage with Beth, or open the cage so Hugh can give her “her toy” (a stuffed floppy-eared bunny). As Nick talks to the warden, Hugh keeps repeating, “I’m gonna need a lawyer, Nick.”
Nick, who repeatedly reminds Hugh that he is a lawyer, is clearly losing patience with Hugh. Before they leave, the warden tells Nick that in three days Beth will be put down. If Nick can prove that she didn’t bite the policeman, there’s a chance she can be released. Otherwise, she will be put down.

LSP Detective Darger arrives at LSP to talk to Lulu about the Twains. She explains that she and Sarah Twain were college roommates, but that she only knows Robert through Sarah. Darger asks if, since she helped with the adoption of the girls, Lulu saw the Twains’ background check. Lulu tersely replies that no, that is kept confidential.
When Darger leaves, Robert and Sarah are waiting to see Lulu. It seems the police have come and taken Michelle.

F&F Burton calls Nick into his office and tells Nick that there is a partners’ meeting at the Incline at 6 o’clock tonight. Nick states that he didn’t know anything about it, but says he’ll try to be there. Before he leaves, Burton hands Nick an envelope and tells him it’s a birthday card and that there’s “a little something inside it for him.” Burton also apologizes, saying he doesn’t know what Nick is into these days, or he would have done some shopping. Nick thanks him and asks Burton if he remembers Hugh from the old neighborhood.
It takes Burton a moment, but he does. He mentions that Hugh lived across the street with his grandmother, and that Nick’s mother used to make him play with Hugh because she was afraid Nick was being mean to him, but that Burton always wondered if Hugh was beating the crap out of Nick.
Nick explains that Hugh is now a client of his through LSP and that he’s in Nick’s office right now, and would Burton like to say hello? Burton agrees, and they go to Nick’s office. When they arrive, it Hugh is sitting on the floor playing with something. Nick walks over to his desk, moving some things out of Hugh’s reach as Burton starts talking to Hugh. It takes him a moment, but Hugh recognizes “Mr. Fallin” and asks where Mrs. Fallin is. Burton, at a loss for a moment, manages to change the subject. He then wishes Nick a happy birthday, and Nick and Hugh leave.

A police station As they enter the police station, Hugh keeps singing “Someone’s having a birthday.” This is clearly irritating Nick, who tries to get him to stop. Hugh starts rambling about a birthday party Nick or someone had when they were little, where they both dressed up as superheroes.
A plain-clothes officer, McNamara, comes over to talk to Nick, and tells him that Hugh is lucky he didn’t arrest him as well as put the dog in the pound. As McNamara walks away, Kim comes in, in uniform; she’s surprised to see Nick, and asks what brings him in. He takes her aside and asks her about McNamara, who she tells him is a royal pain in the ass. He tells her about Hugh’s dog and she informs him that unfortunately there was a little girl murdered in their precinct so he’s not going to get much help right now over a dog. As they take their leave Nick returns to where Hugh is waiting, and Hugh asks “Is she your girlfriend?” and starts talking about how he had a girlfriend once.

A Courtyard outside, possibly near Social Services? Lulu is talking and walking with Laurie, asking about why Michelle Twain has been taken from her parents. Laurie explains that they have the autopsy results on Jennifer now, and they show that at some point Jennifer was sexually molested. As they have no way of telling how long ago this happened, Michelle has been removed from the household pending an investigation.

The Twain house Lulu rushes over to the Twain household, where Sarah is distraught and Robert angry. The police are searching the house. Darger comes downstairs with a box full of S&M paraphernalia. Robert is upset, repeatedly saying that this has nothing to do with the case but is a part of their private life, while Darger tells him he’ll need to come down to the station to make a statement about that.
