Nick arrives at LSP to find two brothers waiting for him. The younger acts as spokesman for the two of them.
He tells Nick that Louisa Archer is his attorney in his upcoming adoption hearing, but that he and his brother want Nick to represent Justin, the older brother, in stopping the adoption unless the foster family is willing to adopt both of them.
He (Matthew) explains that the family wants to adopt him, but they don't want to adopt Justin, who is brain damaged.

Minor Corrections .. The episode opens with Nick sitting at his support group. He finally stands up to speak, then Alvin walks in, Nick does his thing, and .. uncomfortable as hell, he pats the back of his head and walks out .. Cut to Jake's mom and Barbara at LSoP .. with Jake's mom sniffling, but that's the boring little subplot ..

Nick agrees to take their case. He then goes to talk to Lulu about her part in the whole situation.
Lulu explains to Nick that Matthew has a very high IQ, and the family adopting him live in Chicago, where they have arranged for him to go to a special school for extremely gifted children.
When Nick asks why they won't adopt Justin, as the boys want to stay together, Lulu explains that they have fostered Justin, but that they just feel he doesn't fit into their family. For one thing, he makes their teenage daughter feel very uncomfortable.
However, Nick can't accept this idea--he feels it is unfair for them to take Matthew without taking Justin. In his view they want the bright kid but not the damaged kid.

Sorry! You're right GB, it does start with Nick at the NA meeting. It's been a while since I saw the ep, so I left that part out. The leader of the meeting announces that it's time for someone who hasn't ever stood up in the meeting to speak, and turns to Nick. Nick is extremely uncomfortable. He stands up and introduces himself, but denies that he really has a problem. He tells them that he comes to the meetings because it's part of his probation. Meanwhile, Alvin has slipped into the meeting and is sitting in the back, listening. As soon as he's finished speaking, Nick grabs his attache case, and flees the room.

Me butting in... I think that Nick said he was at the meeting because he got caught not because he had a problem.
I also read someone else's summary of the show who said that Nick admitted to using recently, so if true, that might be the reason he left when he saw Alvin.

Also, before Nick arrives at LSP (as Droopy said), a woman comes up to Barbara at LSP and asks if she can talk to a lawyer about a loan document she has.
As Barbara starts to find out more details of the case, she finds that the problem concerns the woman's husband's business. She explains to the woman that LSP only helps those who cannot otherwise afford a lawyer. Since her husband owns a business, she doesn't qualify.
The woman sits, down, cleary discouraged. She explains that without help, they're going to lose their house. Barbara comes around the desk to comfort her, and sees the name on the loan document is Straka.
Intrigued, she asks if the woman is related to Jake Staka. The woman replies, that yes, he's her son. Barbara then asks why Mrs. Straka didn't go to Jake for help.
Mrs. Straka replies that he's much too busy, and that she doesn't want to bother him. You can tell that she doesn't really want him to know.
Next scene, we see Barbara and Mrs. Straka at F&A waiting for Jake. Jake appears, clearly surprised to see his mother and Barbara (remember, he and Barbara went to the Duran Duran concert together last ep).
Barbara quietly explains that Jakes mum came to LSP for assistance, but she thinks Jake will be better able to help. Jake thanks her, and Barbara takes a seat in the waiting area while Jake and his mother go to talk in private.
In private, Jake asks his mother if his dad has been betting on the horses again. She says no, just that business has been bad, and now they're going to lose the house. Jake reassures her, and tells her he'll figure something out.

Looks more confused that ever....

You're exactly right Annie! Thanks! It's hard for me when it's been so long since I saw the episode.
Pleeease butt in whenever I leave something out! I try, but Arria hasn't posted screen caps yet for this ep, so I don't have anything to refresh my memory.

Back at F&A, Jake goes to Burton to see if he can get an advance on his salary. He explains that he needs the money to help his father out with his business.
Burton explains that he has a policy of not making advances on salary, but he's sorry, he can't help Jake.
Jake is at a total loss as to what to do.
