Men’s athletic club Lulu goes and talks to the guy at the reception desk, who is less than helpful. When she starts to lose her cool, yelling at him and asking if he doesn’t care that babies are being born with AIDs as a result of unprotected sex, he remains totally implacable.
As she’s leaving, she runs into Jake, who is reaching for the door handle. She tries to explain to him why she’s there, but can’t find the words and bursts into tears.

The Incline Over drinks (Lulu’s looks to be water), Lulu tells Jake about being pregnant. When he asks her what she wants, she says that it’s just not a good time right now, and besides, she doesn’t know if Nick wants a baby. Jake asks if Lulu loves Nick. She replies, “I think so—most of the time.”<br>

Then Lulu changes to subject, saying she understands why Jake was there, and asking if he’s being careful, taking precautions.
Jake evades her question, telling her that he thinks she should have the baby, as she’ll make a wonderful mother. And he tells her that despite Nick being how he is, he’ll make a solid dad.

Doctor’s Clinic Nick enters, kisses Lulu, and has a seat next to her. A few seconds later the nurse calls out “Louisa Archer.” As Lulu stands to go back, Nick asks if it’s okay if he come back with her. She replies that she thinks it better that he wait in the waiting room.

A bit later . . . Lulu returns to the waiting room. Nick springs to her side, and she tells him that she’s 5 weeks along, saying it as if to mean “only five weeks along.” Nick echoes the words “five weeks,” but makes it sound like a much longer amount of time. Lulu tells him that at this stage it’s little more than a ball of cells as they head out the door.

LSP, Nick’s office Etta slips in and hides under Nick’s desk. When he asks what she’s doing, she tells him she’s hiding, and motions for him to keep the secret. Nick smiles at her antics, and when Suzanne comes in looking for her, he loudly says “No, I haven’t seen her!” while pointing animatedly to beneath his desk. The giggling Etta comes out and is sent to play with Marcus for a few minutes.

Once she’s gone, Suzanne tells Nick that the tests have come back, and Etta is HIV+ but Marcus is not. In addition, the foster family they were going to place them with have backed out now. She wonders if maybe she should have waited and had them tested after they were in foster care. Nick tells her that he made the decision, and that it will be fine.
Meanwhile, Suzanne says she’s located their father. He’s at a boarding house in Morningside for people who are HIV+.

Boarding House Nick accompanies Suzanne to see the Wheat children’s father. Mr. Wheat is lying on a bare mattress in a dingy room. When they first knock on the door, he calls out that he doesn’t want anything to eat today. Suzanne persists, going in and introducing herself and Nick. When she says she’s there about the children, Mr. Wheat asks about his wife. Suzanne explains that she died four days ago and that there is no one to take the children, and in addition, Etta is HIV+.
Micah Wheat is devastated at this news, and starts railing at Nick about how he [Wheat] didn’t do this to them, you [Nick/white men] did this to them.
