309 Let God Sort’Em Out
Nick is getting out of his car. As the camera pans away, we see a tree-lined street, and that Burton has also gotten out of the car. They’re going to see Ron Hassey, who has bought some property on which he is ready to start building apartment buildings. Unfortunately, there are squatters occupying the existing “abandoned” buildings.

Hassey is upset, as he’s ready to begin demolition/construction, and he can’t until the squatters are gone. Nick explains that he’s already talked to the police twice. Hassey says yes, and he hired them because they represent the police and he thought that might help. He tells Nick to go back to the police.

Later, at the same place . . . Laurie Solt has arrived as the police are escorting various squatters from the buildings. She approaches a teen who is watching, distraught, as an elderly man is loaded into an ambulance. He tells her they’re taking his grandfather away and he doesn’t know where they’re taking him. She takes charge of the situation.

LSP Laurie comes in to see Nick. She hands him a folder and introduces Donnie Longow. She tells Nick that his firm is responsible for having Donnie and his grandfather evicted from their house, along with most of the other people there (gestures to the throngs of people in the waiting area at LSP). She says there’s a shelter hearing at 2 p.m. Nick interrupts, saying “Lulu assigns my clients.”
Laurie looks him square in the eye and replies, “I talked with Lulu. He’s yours. You made this mess, now clean it up.” With that she walks out.

Later . . . Robert, Lulu’s assistant is handing out paperwork to the various homeless people Laurie brought in. He tells them that they’re working as fast as they can to find places for all of them to stay.

LSP (Nick’s office) Nick is meeting with Donnie Longow. Donnie wants to know why “that lady” [Laurie] makes it sound like its Nick’s fault that they got evicted. Before Nick has to answer, Lulu knocks on the door to say that she’s going over to the hospital to see Donnie’s grandfather, does he want a ride? He and Nick join her.

Alvin’s office Alvin is meeting with a woman he calls Abby. He’s telling her about how he’s thinking about running for City Council. She points out that he ran before and lost horribly. He reminds her that he was 29 then. She says she’ll think about whether to help him or not.
As she leaves, Alvin invites two men into his office to try to help them find places to stay. One is clean, has been sober for 6 months, and is currently looking for a job. Alvin gives him an application for a place called Hewlett House.

The other man is older and obviously an alcoholic. He asks for an application for the same place, but Alvin refuses, saying he’s obviously still drinking, so they won’t accept him. He starts filling out paperwork on the guy. His name is Ray Schmeel. When Alvin asks his level of education, Ray wants to know why. Alvin replies that it’s so they can try to get him into a vocational program. Ray finally tells him the name of his high school, saying he graduated in 1954.
Alvin is surprised, as that was the same school and year that his dad graduated. Ray says yes, he knew Bobby Masterson, and starts to reminisce.

Hospital Nick, Lulu, and Donnie have arrived to talk with Donnie’s grandfather, Ralph Longow. Ralph tells Lulu that he’s been living in that house since 1965. At first he rented it from this family, but they never took very good care of it, so about 1979 he stopped paying rent. But as they didn’t try to evict him, he stayed there.
Over to the side, Nick tries to warn Lulu not to try to argue adverse possession, but she insists that she’s going to pursue it.

Construction Site Burton and Nick go to talk to Ron Hessing again, this time to try to explain about the adverse possession suit. Hessing is not happy at all.

Outside, as they walk to the car, Burton mentions that Nick’s birthday is coming up. He suggests that Nick, Shannon, and he spend a few days at Nemacola (sp?), a resort. He says it will be relaxing, they can have massages, that sort of thing. Nick looks surprised. “A massage?” he asks. Burton says yes, you know, maybe one of those mud wrap things that they say is so great.
