Outside, walking by some fountains Anne explains to Nick that she’s known for about a year, and that she’s had treatments and been in remission. She explains her family situation. Her ex-husband is “a workaholic prick” and her son is actually afraid of him and his temper. She doesn’t want her son to go to him, but she doesn’t know what to do. She has a much younger sister, who’s 26, and who says she’ll take the boy, but Anne doesn’t know how to arrange it.
When Nick says he can help her, both with her living will and this, she smiles, and replies that she’ll also help him. Nick seems happy at this.

LSP, Lulu’s office Lulu is outlining some projects for Alvin, including the fact that he will have an intern shadowing him for a few days. She then asks if he can cover for her at some meeting that afternoon, as she has to clean up the mess Nick created. Alvin asks if she’s heard from Nick, and when she says no, he appears concerned.

Suzanne appears just then, telling Lulu that she’s got everything in line for the hearing that afternoon. Lulu snaps at Suzanne, who, taken aback, rushes out of Lulu’s office. Lulu follows her, asking her angrily if she knew that Nick and she were living together. Suzanne says yes. Next Lulu asks if Suzanne knew she was pregnant. Suzanne is plainly shocked at this, and says no. Lulu pushes on, asking if Suzanne also knew that Nick was on probation and had no business being around drugs or alcohol. Again, Suzanne is shocked, and she swears she didn’t know. As a final dig, Lulu snaps that Suzanne should tell Nick the next time she sees him that she (Lulu) is tired of cleaning up his messes.

F&F Jake comes back and tells Burton that he couldn’t find Nick. Burton is clearly upset, stating that they are likely to be sued for malpractice if this deal doesn’t close today (the clients are refusing to leave). As Burton puts on his coat to go out, Jake says he’ll look over the file and he should be able to draw up a basic opinion-letter in a few hours. Burton is skeptical, but Jake says he is a damn fine lawyer and he can do this. Burton leaves.

Anne’s house Nick is sitting at the dining table. Anne brings a plate with a sandwich and places it in front of Nick. Nick looks at it happily and starts to eat. While he eats they discuss the living will. Nick goes over each question, Anne gives her answers, and then he passes it over for her to sign.

Before they can start discussing custody, Anne’s son comes in. We don’t see his face, but he’s dressed in a dark private-school blazer. He comes in, tells his mother he has a lot of homework and that he’s going to get started. Nick watches the boy as he passes him.

Just as well as Nick doesn't see his face. In Back to the Future (we watched it last night for the 100th time) the professor says that if you meet yourself it will cause a tear in the space time continuum that could lead to the annililation of all matter. (Or maybe just the annililation of all summers - that would explain a few things.)

Anne tells Nick how proud she is of her son, how studious he is, all A’s. She says most mothers would give anything for a son like hers, but she says he’s too serious, and she would actually gladly see him get a C if she could just see him smile. She proudly refers to the boy (who is gone) as “My little man.” It’s clear Nick sees himself in the boy.

Nick does see the boy's face, just not right then.

LSP Alvin is worried that no one has heard from Nick, but Lulu is still too angry to be worried. Burton shows up, asks Lulu if she’s seen Nick today. She says she hasn’t, and if neither one of them knows where he is, then they probably know what he’s doing. She heads off to the courthouse with Hendricks.
Burton asks Alvin if it’s okay if he looks in Nick’s office, as he’s looking for a document. Alvin says sure.

Anne’s house Nick and Anne are now discussing her son’s guardianship. Nick explains how custody issues work in Pennsylvania, and points out that the child’s father doesn’t sound abusive. Anne is insistent, and refuses to think about it when he asks if she has asked what her son wants. She refuses to listen, insisting that he’s just a boy, he can’t decide this.
To clear the air, Nick asks if there is a restroom he can use. She directs him upstairs, the end of the hall.

As Nick is shown washing his hands in the basin, he glances into the mirror in front of him and sees the boy walk by, looking down. He follows the boy down the hall, where he sees him sitting at his desk in his room, working studiously. Nick just stands there watching him.

The Incline Alvin goes in. He asks Jerry, the bartender, if he’s seen Nick, but Jerry says no. Alvin hands over his card and asks Jerry to call him if he does. Jerry agrees.

F&F Burton is pacing the floor at this point. He says he’s going to go tell the clients everything. Jake stops him, saying he’s almost finished. Burton says that this letter can’t possibly take everything into consideration. Jake agrees that it doesn’t, but says it’s good enough. Burton angrily says he doesn’t like to do business this way. When he finds Jake didn’t even go in Nick’s house earlier, he sends him back, telling him where to find the key under the planter. Jake silently heads out.

Anne’s house Nick is still standing in the hallway looking into the boy’s room at the boy at work at his desk.
In the background you can hear an argument between Anne and another adult (who actually sounds like Burton, a bit). Nick is startled by this, and the boy looks up, but he doesn’t appear surprised, and goes back to his studies.
Nick goes downstairs. Anne is re-entering the house. She explains that her ex-husband won’t hear of letting her sister take custody of the boy. She’s upset with this confrontation.
