314 All is Mended
Nick’s house, night Someone, looks to be Lulu, is ringing the front doorbell and knocking loudly at the door. Nick, in t-shirt and pajama pants, comes to the door. He opens it, letting a frozen Lulu in. She apologizes for the disturbance, Nick notes that it’s late (he appears to have been asleep), and offers to make them some tea. As he heads to the kitchen and turns on the kettle, Lulu blurts out “There’s a problem with the baby.” Nick looks at her and asks “What kind of problem?” Lulu bluntly replies, “Down’s Syndrome.”

She then goes on to tell how her triple marker tests came back indicating there might be a problem, so she had an amnio, and she got the results back today. When Nick asks the accuracy, she replies that it’s 99%. She tells him she doesn’t know what to do at this point, she’s not sure if “we” can handle a child like this. Nick immediately homes in on the “we.” Lulu leaves, saying they’ll talk more tomorrow.

LSP Nick is meeting with a client, Carl Tilden, but is clearly distracted and watching for Lulu to arrive.
When he sees Lulu through the door, he excuses himself and rushes over to her office to talk with her. Nick begs Lulu to try their relationship again. Before he goes back to his client, he asks her if they have time [to think about things]. She replies that she’s in her second trimester, so no, they don’t have time.

Nick rushes back to his office, past his client, and slams the door, knocking over a chair in frustration. Alvin comes in to check on him. With very little prompting, a tearful Nick tells Alvin about the baby. Alvin is very sympathetic, and offers to help any way he can. He then discretely leaves.

Nick composes himself for a moment, then leaves the office, and goes back with his client to the conference room, where he is once again attentive to his client. Tilden explains that he has lost custody of his three daughters due to a claim by his eldest of molestation. The girls are currently living with their maternal grandparents. Their mother is in a coma, and has been for four years.

After Tilden leaves, Alvin calls Nick over. He explains that they sometimes work with this facility for people with Down’s Syndrome, and he has a 23-year old man named Mark who needs assistance with a probate issue. Nick had complained to Alvin that the literature he’d gotten really didn’t explain things about Down’s, and Alvin offers Nick the case so that he can spend some time with Mark.

Riverbrook Country Club Jake is among a small group of men touring the club as part of an orientation session. As he wanders the halls, he suddenly runs into Kate Shaw. As they chat, Kate mentions that her great-great-grandfather helped found the country club. She also mentions that she’s having a shower there for Lulu. Jake, rather impressed with Kate, asks her out, and they wind up agreeing to have lunch together later, there at the club.

Home for the Developmentally Disabled Nick goes by to see his client. Hank, one of the employees at the facility, explains the situation to Nick. Mark’s mother died and left him $15,000. While that’s not a lot of money, unless it is put in a trust, Mark’s Social Security benefits will be cut off for a few months while that money is used to pay for his upkeep. Essentially, he’ll lose his place there.
Nick tries to explain the issue to Mark, but Mark is preoccupied with a car magazine he was looking at. Mark breaks away from his obsession with cars to tell Nick that he likes acting, and that he’s going to play Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
You can see Nick have a real glimmer of hope for happiness with this.

LSP, conference room Nick is meeting with Megan Tilden, the oldest daughter. Kate Shaw and a social worker are also present. Megan admits that she made the molestation charge up, all because she was angry at her father because of a ski trip with her school’s ski club. Nick says that if she’s recanted, there is no issue. Kate and the social worker disagree, stating that there are clear signs of neglect, as Megan is responsible for raising her younger sisters. Nick says that is a separate issue.
