Nick goes into his office, to find Violet, the little girl whose mother helped them find Shannon when she ran away, waiting there. He asks how long she’s been there, and she says she doesn’t know.
Nick goes to Alvin, explains that Violet’s foster family is moving to Nebraska, and asks him to take over the case and find her a new foster family. Alvin agrees. (Nick isn’t being cold-hearted, it’s just this will have to be done because his community service ends.)

A little later, Nick talks to Jake and congratulates him on his engagement. Jake is clearly on the defensive. When Nick suggests they sit down sometime next week and rework the fee schedules and pay schedules, Jake accuses Nick of threatening to tell Kate about his bisexuality. Nick says he isn’t, but Jake won’t believe him.

Restaurant Kate is talking over wedding plans while a clearly uncomfortable Jake tries to figure out how to approach his big secret. Finally he tells her that when he was mugged it was more than that, that the guy also raped him. He says he didn’t tell her because he was afraid she would see him as weak. Then he says that people are trying to spread rumours about it, which is why he’s telling her. He tells her he understands if she needs time to think about it.

Penitentiary Alvin meets with Taliek. Alvin says Taliek’s previous attorneys never brought up the issue of Taliek being under extreme stress at the time of the killing. This is the issue Alvin wants to use to justify the appeal.

LSP As Nick arrives, Kate is leaving, and Nick congratulates her. In Lulu’s office, Lulu confides that Kate came by to talk to her about Jake. Lulu didn’t know what to say, so she just changed the subject to Kate’s wedding shower.
She says that Kate mentioned that Jake and Nick are having some problems at work. Nick says he didn’t want to worry her right now, but that Jake is trying to kick him out of the firm. Lulu is concerned, but tells him she doesn’t care if he works for Fallin & Fallin or not.

When Nick gets to his office, Alvin comes by to see him. He presents Nick with a gift in honor of completing his community service—a fountain pen that Alvin’s grandfather gave to Alvin’s father when he graduated from high school. Before he leaves, he asks Nick if he didn’t come to enjoy working there. Nick says no, but he’s grinning as if he’s kidding.

Manco Center The judge has terminated Kevin’s parental rights, and since they no longer need his signature, the adoptive parents now refuse to let him see his daughter. Kevin becomes quite angry.
Chris tells Nick that because he talked to the head of the center, the guy called the black kid who beat him on the carpet, now the other black kids say they’re going to kill him. He tells Nick he should have worked harder to get him out of there rather than spending all his time helping a black kid.

LSP Alvin asks Nick to read over some papers for Taliek’s appeal, since Nick once helped Burton with an issue he argued before the state supreme court. They go into Nick’s office to look it over, where Nick finds Violet hiding behind the desk. When he asks why she’s there, she says she’s hiding from him, and points at Alvin. She says she doesn’t like him. Alvin and Nick grin, and Nick asks Lulu to take Violet for a while so he can finish up with Alvin.

Penitentiary Alvin says the third district circuit court has denied the appeal, but he wants to take it to the state supreme court.
Taliek wants to talk about his fear of death, however. He’s talked to people who’ve told him about how the sentence will be carried out. It’s a series of three injections. The first one puts you to sleep, and they put a diaper on you because it also often causes you to lose bladder control. The second one stops your breathing, and the third one stops your heart. What scares him is that they say sometimes the first shot doesn’t work, so you lay there, strapped to the table, unable to move, while you feel your lungs stop working and your heart stop beating. It absolutely terrifies him.
Note: This is not unlike what Alvin is facing, as the ALS will cause his muscles to atrophy and stop working.

Out in the main office, Jake thanks Nick for not telling Kate the truth about the mugging. Nick looks at him coldly and says “You knew I wouldn’t.” Jake thanks him again, and as he gets on the elevator tells Nick that this won’t be changing his vote at the meeting that afternoon. Nick says he didn’t expect it to.
