F&F Burton has a representative from the insurance company in to meet with him. Apparently they’ve known each other for a long time. The man tries to say that they refuse to pay because Mary was late in her payment. Burton argues that the company had always shown leniency in the past. They set another meeting for day after tomorrow.

Jesse’s mom’s apartment Jesse is so proud to show his mother his graduation cap and gown. Unfortunately, his mother doesn’t want to see him. She is remarried and has a new baby, and her husband doesn’t know about Jesse. When Jesse tries to remind her of her promise to pay for college, she denies saying it and explains that there is no money.
As they turn to leave, Jesse tells Nick a story about his father, who he claims was a famous football player.
When Jesse asks Nick to drive him around so he can look for a job, Nick tells him to come by F&F the next morning to see about a holiday job working for them. Jesse is ecstatic.

Burton’s place Burton and Mary are in the kitchen. Mary apologizes and explains that she has to work a double shift, which means she’ll be in at 4 a.m. Burton says that’s ok, that he and Shannon will be fine. Mary confides that Shannon thinks Burton is a gentleman. As Mary goes to leave, she tells Shannon that she needs to turn off the tv and go to bed. Shannon doesn’t want to go to bed, and after Mary leaves, asks Burton if she can have a Coke. Burton apologizes, but explains that he has only tonic water and seltzer. When Shannon says that seltzer is gross, Burton asks if she’s ever had it with chocolate syrup and milk mixed in, which is called an egg cream. He then proceeds to make her one, with the condition that she’ll go to bed afterwards.

F&F When Nick arrives the next morning, he is confronted by an awestruck Jake. Jake explains that Nick’s “trainee” arrived at 7 a.m. and went straight to work. He takes Nick to the conference room, where Jesse has reduced 36 jumbled boxes of files into neat orderly stacks, separated by type of document and placed in date order. Nick is clearly impressed by Jesse’s initiative. When Jake starts telling Jesse that he’s going to teach him how to date-stamp (or something like that), Nick tells Jake he’ll have to find someone else, as he needs Jesse’s help. Jake is left babbling in wonder, as Nick tosses back to him that he can always call cousin Rudy!
After Jake leaves, Jesse explains that he ultimately wants to go to law school. Nick invites Jesse to follow him around that day and see what he does. As they leave, Nick explains the schedule for the day.

Why don't they hire a first year law graduate. This is the type of work they do. With all the due diligence and litigation, surely they should have a Litigation Support department. (Says SMB who has done more than her fair share of lit support).

Burton’s place Burton and Shannon come in. They have gone shopping, and Burton bought Shannon a new DVD. In addition, he’s been helping her study for a Social Studies test on the Depression. She excitedly tells Mary “Burton was alive during the Depression, did you know that?” Burton grins sheepishly, and explains that he was very little at the time. Shannon heads off to watch her movie.

Mary has been cleaning on the kitchen the whole time. Burton tells her she doesn’t need to do that, that he has a girl who comes in and does that once a week. Mary insists, explaining it makes her feel better. Burton tells Mary that he wants to take her and Shannon out to dinner at a nice restaurant, to Giselle’s. As Mary starts to protest, he says that he knows that she and Shannon lost most of their things in the fire, so he sent Gretchen out to get them some things to wear.
Mary protests, explaining gently that men often get the wrong idea about her. Burton interrupts, saying that he has the same problem, that women are always misunderstanding things, and simply want to sleep with him. They both laugh.

LSP Nick arrives at LSP with Jesse in tow. Soon after they arrive, DeBord arrives. He has a gun in his hand. Alvin, before he sees the gun, asks if he can help DeBord. The man simply turns and fires at him. Luckily, Alvin saw the gun and dove to the floor.
In the conference room, Nick gets Jesse and DeBord’s family to hide under the table. He tells Jesse to stay there, not to move. He then grabs a phone and calls the police.

After a moment, Nick comes out and hides behind the column. DeBord catches a glimpse of him, and turns the gun on Nick. Nick starts trying to talk DeBord into putting the gun down. As Nick talks soothingly to DeBord, Jesse suddenly springs from the conference room, trying to disarm DeBord. As he does, DeBord fires the gun reflexively, hitting Jesse in the face. DeBord is clearly shocked at what he’s done. Nick is cradling Jesse in his arms.
Just at that moment, as DeBord is stammering about he didn’t mean for it to happen, the elevator doors open, and Lulu steps out, asking, “What’s going on?”<br>

DeBord immediately trains the gun on Lulu, demanding to know who she is. Clearly shocked, but still thinking on her feet, Lulu tells him she’s a public defender sent over to represent him. DeBord doesn’t believe her at first, but she keeps talking to him, trying to convince him. Finally she tells him that she has been offered a deal for him in which he will serve no jail time and get to see his kids. DeBord believes her, and puts the gun down on a desk. James, who’s been poised and waiting for the opportunity, springs on him as soon as the gun’s down.

A bit later . . . The police are there, questioning Alvin about what happened. As they move away, Lulu joins him and they chat for a moment. One of them makes the comment that Nick went to the hospital with Jesse.
Lulu explains to Alvin that she had tickets for the symphony tonight, but she forgot them in her desk. But for that, she wouldn’t have come back.
As she turns to leave, DeBord’s lawyer and Tuggle come in and question her as to why she lied to DeBord. They are incensed that she told him she was representing him, and they plan to report her to the review committee.
