McBride Center Alvin briefs Nick that he has to explain to his three kids that as there are currently no other beds available, they will be placed at the Metropolitan Psychiatric Center. Nick enters the room where his clients are waiting. He is faced there by Josh (the boy from the adoption parties), Wendy Newburg, and a young man he doesn’t recognize, who is named Anders. Nick explains the situation quickly, then turns to leave. As he leaves, Wendy hurls a curse at him.

Courthouse or County Building, Placement clerk Nick tries to jump the queue of social workers to speak to the clerk about possible places for the LSP children, but the man barks at him to get back in line. Alvin, elbowing his way in, greets the man by name, asks about his pet snake, and then gets down to business. The man can give them two beds at another center, but they had better be for good kids, as that center won’t usually take kids who’ve been at McBride.

Outside, Alvin and Nick discuss how they are going to allocate the two beds (Alvin gives one to Nick for his clients, keeps one for his own). He makes a $10 bet with Nick that he knows which kid Nick will give the bed to. Nick agrees.

Hospital Nick goes in to see Lulu, taking her flowers. As he leans over to kiss her forehead, Lulu’s doctor comes in on rounds. The doctor checks her eyes, her memory, etc., then tells her she’s doing well. Lulu is very bright throughout, almost perky. Nick is standing to the side, looking on adoringly. After the doctor leaves, Lulu apologizes for feeling suddenly very tired, but Nick says that’s ok, and goes to hang out in the ante-room while she takes a nap.

F&F, conference room Burton and Claire meet with Scott Davenport, the police officer who shot Colin Bennet. Burton explains to him that Colin has filed a notice of claim against the city, as they had expected him to do.
Davenport explains that he stopped off at Al’s Diner to use the restroom. As he opened the restroom door, he saw two men, one black, one white, involved in a drug deal, with the white man selling drugs, which he believed to be crystal meth, to the black man. He explains that Colin rushed towards him, with his hands up, as if to leave, not as if to harm him.

LSP Nick meets with Gil, who runs the shelter where Josh had previously been placed, to see if Josh can return there. Gil explains that it is not merely an issue of what happened to the boy Josh pushed down the stairs, but that since he has been at the McBride Center some of the older kids have sexually molested Josh. Gil says that with as many young children as he has at his shelter, he can’t risk bringing Josh back.

LSP Nick meets with Wendy Newburg. As their meeting starts, she asks after Burton. As the meeting progresses, she tells Nick that everyone at McBrides cuts themselves, that glass is like money there. She says that one time she cut herself too deep, and they sent her to Metro (the psych hospital). She tells him about how she was restrained when she wouldn’t cooperate, etc. She also tells him how her friends from her old school are going to a Greek Island for the summer, but how she spent last summer in foster care, and how she ran away “to spend some time with an old boyfriend.” Social Services called the police, and she was sent to the McBride Center.
Nick is clearly bothered by all that she tells him.

F&F Burton comes to Nick’s office to ask him about Colin. He wants to know if Colin was merely Nick’s drug dealer, or if they were friends. Nick tries not to answer at first, but when Burton pushes the issue, Nick snaps “He’s just a drug dealer. That’s what he does for a living.” Burton says ok, and walks out.

Burton heads to his office, where Claire is waiting with a draft for the settlement.
Burton seems distracted, so she asks if she did something wrong. He says no, she did a great job, it’s just that he doesn’t want to settle. He asks her to draft a motion to dismiss.

After the doctor leaves, Nick says that he’s been thinking, and that he thinks Lulu will need some help when she first gets out of the hospital. He offers to stay at her place, on the couch, for a while.

LSP Wendy Newburg’s mother has come to see Nick about regaining custody of Wendy. As they chat, Mrs. Newburg makes mention that she and Frank Newburg are back together. Hearing this, Nick tells her that she’s crazy, that there is no way the courts are going to give her back custody of Wendy.

Anders also stops by to see Nick about trying to find him a better place than Metro.
Feeling overwhelmed, Nick finally goes to see Alvin to find out how he decided which kid to give the bed to. Alvin explains that he drew straws. Nick is in disbelief. Alvin says that there is really no fair way to do it, so he drew straws. As Nick leaves, Alvin tries to bring up the subject of Nick’s hours.
