Okay, next scene.
Nick is at the cemetery, visiting his mother's grave. It's her birthday, and he has brought flowers. Burton approaches him, they talk for a moment about Nick's mum, and start back towards their cars. At this point, Burton mentions something about how Nick needs to contact his assistant, Sheila, about getting the lease on his BMW transfered over, and Nick needs to change over the service on his cell phone.
Nick is miffed, partly because Burton chose that place, that day, to bring this up, and hands Burton the phone and tells him not to worry, he'll take care of the car, F&A won't be responsible for it, or something like that.

So Nick heads off to Kirk & McGee, his day already starting out badly.
He gets to K&M, and Kirk (or is it McGee, one of the big guys) tells him to settle into his office, but they don't really have anything for him to work on just yet. So Nick morosely heads to his new, deluxe corner office. (This new office is even starker and barer than the one you will eventually see at F&A.) The place is bare, except for a photo of Nick's mum on the desk.

Bored senseless at K&M, Nick decides to head over to Legal Services to see what's going on there. As he is leaving K&M, who does he run into in the hallway, but Colin the slimy drug dealer, there to pay a visit to another associate! At Legal Services, things are pretty busy as usual, but not too hectic, and Alvin breaks the news to him that he doesn't have anything for Nick to work on right now. His day just goes from bad to worse--nobody needs him or wants him!

Meanwhile, at Legal Services, Alvin and Laurie are going kind of head to head over a case, and we find out about why Alvin decided to get into legal aid for children.
Lulu, has been busy as well. I don't remember where she had been, but she walked by this dumpster or skip, and hear's crying from within. She investigates, and finds that someone has left a baby in the rubbish!

Back at K&M, they've found something for Nick to work on. He is to work on this deal wherein a father is selling his company to his son. The dad wants to make it a fair price, and not be too hard on his son, but Nick tells him that the son is taking advantage of him.
So Nick and his client meet with the son and his attorney, who just happens to be . . .any guesses? Burton!

Burton, needless to say, is none too thrilled to see that Nick is negotiating this deal from the K&M side, and sends Kirk (or is it McGee) a number of dirty looks.
They start negotiations, and Nick keeps trying to fight the agreement, telling his client that the deal isn't fair to him, that his son is taking advantage of him.
The scene culminates with Burton accusing Nick of letting their personal conflict get in the way of business.

When they get back to K&M, Kirk (or is he McGee?) jumps Nick's case, culminating with "We hired you because we thought you were one hell of a lawyer."
Nick: "I am one hell of a lawyer."
Nick goes into his lovely but sparsely furnished new office sit and glumly consider his life, sitting before him on the desk the framed photo of his mum and a small bag of white powder.

We are left up in the air as to Nick's decision, but let's just note that when he arrives at the Incline later for Alvin's party, he's pretty wired. I was still in doubt over this, but Nick's later confession to "slipping up" during an NA meeting confirms that he used the drugs.
