How about Sarah ?........you all liked Sarah very much, (and by the way, that was another outburst of Rosiiii when some posters were making some nasty remarks about Sarah's writing style.......but the whole thing got out of hand, and could have been avoided...that's all I'm saying!) and so there should be no reason why her fanfic won't be read anymore!
Okay... I have refrained from commenting for quite some time, but now that the moratorium on the issue has expired -- I feel the need to say something.
First, I will say, Bakergirl you are right in suggesting that the aforementioned mayhem could've been avoided... if people could learn to keep their less than kind opinions to themselves or at the very least post them privately, as not to embarass the original poster publically. These public comments hurt, are very offensive, and are very discouraging to posters. Constructive criticism is one thing when done in respectful manner, but the remarks made in regards to the fic thread were rude and uncalled for. When such an attack is made, I feel that the poster has every right to defend themselves and their thoughts accordingly and I do appreciate everyone who came to the defense of my work as well.
Now, I am not by any means referring to this board specifically, but the nature of some message boards in general. If you are in the minority with your opinions and ideas, posting can become quite the ordeal. While there are many pleasant individuals who support, or at the very least acknowledge opinions different than their own -- unfortunately, there are others who will go out of their way to attack that post, often employing crude terminology and spiteful remarks to do so. It truly does become a vicious circle on the boards, some defending their posts more vociferously than others when provoked.
While everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, its the matter of expression that counts. If people cannot handle the opinions of others, I pose the question -- why are you coming to a message board? what did you expect to find?
Disagreement over an idea, or opinion is one thing, but there is no need for an all-out war to be waged over something so trivial as a TV character. For me, its no wonder that many people lurk on these boards. I cannot blame them for not wanting to post.
As a fan of both Lulu and WM, I can understand the frustrations with the storyline -- but for that, I blame the writers. I'd even go as far as to say that if the man himself, being DH, had a problem with the character of Lulu or the way she was being portrayed... he would've done something about it long ago.
Truth be told, more insight as to the Lulu's feelings and motivations
could make the story a lot better. But, I am not the one with the pen in hand and there is not a damn thing I can do about it. I accept this, and continue watching -- still finding enjoyment in her portrayal and the show itself.
Criticizing WM's interpretation, her appearances or talents, and/or senselessly bashing the character of Lulu will get me nowhere, nor help me enjoy the show anymore -- this I know, and this is what I cannot understand about the nature of some posters, who take their opinions a step to far and make their responses very
personal, and often end up attacking the original poster or the actress herself. If those attacked try to defend themselves, war breaks out across the boards. Its as if on some boards, diverse opinions aren't encouraged, but instead punished.
In regards to this board, I definitely would not like to see this become another SBOL. If ever there was a volatile message board, it would be SBOL and there should be a warning message with membership, "post at your own risk, but if in the minority -- you might just be ignored."
Anyway... I know what happened on this site, but I will honestly say that I don't believe that Rosiiii was the problem. As I stated earlier, some posters defend themselves and their opinions more vehemently than others and have every right to do so when their thoughts and ideas are being criticized although there is clearly no "right" or "wrong" answer, as in fact we are commenting on a TV show and its characters, based upon interpretation.
The attacks of other posters against Rosiiii were often written in a personal nature, which became all the more insulting because they are written in a public forum -- that, IMO, was going a step to far, and I do believe she had every right to speak out in her own defense when provoked. The "tit for tat" behind game theory definitely wouldn't work here, as one insult only provokes another and no one will ever win. We can bo back and forth in thread after thread about who said what and who did what first, but it gets us no where. When provoked, its a natural instinct to defend oneself. I am not saying that these posts were always in the right, but neither were the other members partaking in the mess. Unfortunately, the posts as of late got out of control and measures were taken to prevent another SBOL-like incident from occuring.
Regretfully, posters such as myself who often agreed with Rosiiii and shared many of the same opinions are at a loss now because Rosiiii is no longer a member. I, for one, am sad to see her go. Her fics were definitely enjoyed and appreciated, and her opinions both intriguing and creative. The ingenuity of her ideas is greatly missed.
This is just a TV show and everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion. When I post, I do so with the acceptance of the fact that my ideas may be challenged. I don't mind being challenged, as often I can engage in a conversation of sorts and perhaps share in a new point of view. If a poster doesn't like what someone else has to say or they happen to disagree, they should just skip the thread if they cannot respond in a fair and appropriate manner. That, in my opinion, is what is supposed to happen on these boards -- when the basic concepts of civility and respect are enacted.
