The Innocent
Out on the street Laurie calls Nick on his cell phone. The scene switches back and forth between the two of them (on different streets) as they talk. Laurie is calling to tell Nick that Brandon Caffey, one of three siblings Nick acted as guardian for last spring, has been mauled to death by a dog, and the wake is this evening. Nick says he’s sorry, but he has a dinner to go to. Laurie ignores this and proceeds to tell him the time and location of the wake.

LSP Evening, Lulu is alone in her office when she hears the elevator doors shut. Thinking it’s Alvin, she calls out to him as she goes out into the lobby. To her surprise, it is a tall black man, looking for Alvin. He needs help contesting his wife’s attempts to divorce him. She tells him Alvin isn’t here, and that he should come back around 8.30 the next morning.

Funeral Home Nick is standing in the hallway outside the room where the wake is being held. He is obviously ill-at-ease. Laurie arrives and asks if he’s been in yet. He tells her no, he wasn’t sure they’d remember him. She tells him that Andrea (the eldest daughter we discover) is actually quite fond of him.

They go in, where first Laurie then Nick express their condolences to the boy’s sisters and their foster parents. The natural father is sitting on a chair nearby, obviously half out of it. Upon seeing Nick and Laurie, he yells “The government shouldn’t be here!”
Everyone is clearly upset with his outburst. He then tries to stand and walk towards them, but stumbles and falls. We hear the foster mother, Joyce Burke, tell her husband “He’s on drugs!”
Andrea, however, rushes over to her father, tells someone to expose his jugular, then takes a plastic case from his coat pocket. She explains that it is his diabetes. She takes out a needle and syringe, draws a dose of medication, and injects it into the vein. Caffey immediately begins to recover. Very upset with her father’s behavior, she turns to her foster parents, Nick, and Laurie, and says “He’ll be alright—he always is.”
LSP Tom Burke, the Caffey girls’ foster father, stops in to see Nick. He was working on a job in an office two doors down, and he has some questions concerning he and his wife’s attempts to adopt the girls. He explains that they had an option on a house to buy, but they have had to use the money to pay for Brandon’s funeral instead. Caffey is supposed to be paying child support for the children, but he has failed to do so. Burke wants to know if this will affect their plans to adopt. Nick asks if Burke is working steadily and if his wife is also working. When Burke says they are, Nick asks if they have a separate bed for each child. Burke answers yes. Nick tells him there should be no problem. Burke is relieved and thanks Nick.

Yes, I think Lulu was frightened Spunky. That's why she got rid of him so quickly.
By the way--did I mention that he had been in prison for the past 21 years for a murder he didn't commit and that he has received a pardon from the governor due to DNA evidence?

LSP, later (that day?) The Burkes (the foster parents) and the eldest girl, Andrea, are there to discuss the adoption with Laurie and Nick. Laurie has explained that in order for the Burkes to adopt Andrea and her sister Kristen, they must first have a TPR (termination of parental rights) hearing. Anything they have showing Lou Caffey to be an unfit father (besides the fact that Brandon was in his care when attacked by the dog) will help their case.
With this, Andrea steps forward and starts to list things: how her father uses heroin, and how on two occasions he made her help him with the needle, just as she does with his diabetes medication; how the junkyard where Brandon was attacked was across the street from the dealer’s house that her father frequents.

Don't mean to interrupt. But just to briefly answer Leonie's question - yes she was scared - tried to keep her cool. Moniz played that exceptionally, you could see the fear/anxiety in her face - and she even implied others were in the office, when they actually weren't - it was very late and she was all alone. oops - sorry Gin, you beat me to it. Continueon...great breakdown as usual - thanks.

LSP Alvin tells Lulu she has a new client, Albert Gregg. He explains that Gregg has been freed from prison after being falsely imprisoned for a murder he did not commit. He is seeking their help because his wife now wants a divorce, and Gregg does not want to give her this divorce.
Lulu meets with Gregg, apologizing for not talking to him last night. He tells her it’s ok, he would have been scared too if he had been in her place. He explains that his wife, to whom he has been married since 1981, is filing for divorce. He, however, doesn’t want this divorce, but wants to make the marriage work. He says the reason his wife wants to divorce him is that he hasn’t been able to find a job and that he has nightmares about prison. When Lulu, doing the math, asks how he met his wife, he explains that she taught bible classes for the inmates at the prison.

Nick’s office, LSP Andrea Caffey is trying to convince Nick that her brother’s death was not as cut-and-dried as it appears to be. The police say that Brandon pushed open the gate at the junkyard, letting the dog out, and that the dog then mauled him. She tells Nick that this could not have happened this way, as Brandon was absolutely petrified of dogs.
When Nick asks if she has told the Burkes about this, she says that she has but they don’t want to cause a stir by bringing it up. Nick tries to put her off, but eventually she wears him down and he agrees to go out to the junkyard with her.

The junkyard Nick and Andrea have gone to the junkyard to look for answers. When they arrive, Andrea points out the drug dealer’s house across the street and the bar nearby, both where her father likes to hang out.
Nick goes up to the fence to talk to a man he sees working in the junkyard. The man tells him the owner is at another of their yards this week. Nick explains that he knew the boy who was killed and is looking for information. He can’t help them, as this is his first week. When Nick asks who he is replacing, the guy answers “Danny.” Nick gets the rest of Danny’s name from him.
Meanwhile, Andrea, who Nick told to stay back by the car, has noticed a makeshift memorial to her brother on the sidewalk, some flowers and burnt-out candles. Nick sees her and approaches. As he does, he sees her cross herself.

Courthouse Lulu has taken Gregg over to the courthouse. It seems that Gregg’s last job before prison was as a handyman at the courthouse. Lulu finds the judge who presided over Gregg’s trial, and he agrees to help her get Gregg’s job back. Gregg is sure that by finding a job his wife will drop the divorce proceedings.

LSP Tom Burke again comes to see Nick concerning the adoption. It turns out that he and his wife are the children’s god parents as well as their foster parents, and Lou Caffey owes them quite a bit of money in back child-support. Nick tells him that they will take care of things and Burke leaves. As soon as he is gone, Nick picks up the phone and makes a call, asking for “Danny.”
