LSoP Lulu is on the phone with her doctor’s office. She wants to set up an appointment to see the doctor for some tests, but she doesn’t want to tell the nurse what kind of tests. She looks up as she hangs up the phone to see that Nick has poked his head in the door. “Were you listening?”
Nick answers “No—did you page me?”
Lulu, “No.” Nick goes off to find who did.

Laurie and Alvin are in Alvin’s office. They’ve called Nick in to talk about a pair of siblings he was appointed guardian for about a year before, and for whom he is still designated guardian. The boy, Dale has been diagnosed with leukemia, and the sister, Penny, is probably the best possible match for a bone marrow transplant. Problem is, Penny has disappeared. Both were placed at the Allegheny Children’s Center, but she’s gone.

Conference room at LSoP Dale, the brother, is giving details of his sister to a police officer, while Nick looks on. The policeman asks for a picture of Penny. Dale pulls out an envelope and extracts a picture of his family. He points out how odd they all look with hair (he’s had chemo). He tears the photo in half, telling the officer he wants to keep the part that shows him with hair.

As they leave the conference room, Lulu comes up to Nick and gives him the phone number of the siblings’ former social worker. Dale looks at her intently while Nick and Lulu talk, and Lulu looks at him a couple of times. When Nick and Dale are on the elevator, Dale comments that Lulu find him interesting. Nick asks how he knows, and Dale tells him about how since he’s had chemo and everything, he can tell that some girls find him “deep.” He concludes by telling Nick that Lulu is “pretty hot.”
“Yeah, well, she’s pretty married,” replies Nick.
“So what’s her husband gonna do to me?” asks Dale, referring to his condition.

A Store Nick and Dale go to the store where the former social worker now works. Nick introduces them, and the social worker says sure, she has some information for them, just let her get it out of her purse in the back room. Nick, sensing something awry, goes after her, to find she has fled through the back door. He and Dale try to stop her as she drives off, but she knocks Dale down. Nick starts to help him up, but Dale stops him, explaining he doesn’t like being touched (because of germs and his illness).

F&F Burton has called Nick in. He wants to explain the situation and how to handle Thomas. He tells Nick that Thomas is interested in the deal Nick has set up, but there are a few things Nick needs to know about working with Thomas:
• Never, ever wear green (it makes him uneasy). • Don’t shake his hand, he doesn’t like it. • Don’t ever lie to him.

Thomas’ office Nick is discussing the deal with Henry Thomas, who is definitely a bit odd. Nick has followed all the guidelines Burton set out. As the meeting is drawing to a close, Nick makes a major faux pas and asks Thomas “Do you think you’re up to this?”
Thomas looks at Nick coldly and asks what he means. Nick explains that his father has told him that Thomas is suffering from exhaustion. Thomas tells Nick a story about some businessman who decided he was tired of his business, so he sold it and moved to Texas to raise cattle. He quotes the guy as saying “Some people know how to handle livestock, some don’t.” He then tells Nick “Your father knows how to handle livestock.”
LSoP Nick and Laurie have Dale and Penny’s mother in Nick’s office where they are asking her if she knows anything of Penny’s whereabouts. She wants to know how they’ve lost Penny. They had told her a year ago that it was best if she were out of the kids’ lives (the father was abusive). As they are explaining everything to her, Nick’s phone rings and it’s Thomas. He takes care of it as quickly as possible, with Laurie shooting him dirty looks all the while.

At the end, the mother asks if she can see Dale. They take her to the conference room, where she and Dale have a very stilted conversation. Dale asks her if she can bring him his 12-string guitar, as he’s thinking of taking it up again. She apologizes, but tells him that she sold it. As they part, she asks if it’s ok to hug him, but he refuses her, saying it’s because of germs.
