Children’s Services Alvin goes to see Laurie to try to convince her to give Janine back her daughter (Lulu has told him Laurie is the reason Janine can’t get the child back right now). He goes on to explain to Laurie that he and Janine are old friends, that she was there for him and offered him companionship after his divorce, and that she has never asked him for money. Laurie seems sympathetic, and agrees to give Janine custody of Emily until they see the outcome of the case.

How did the kid get lead poisoning in the first place BTW?

Nick meets with Bryant’s aunt (at the courthouse, maybe?). He asks her if there is lead paint in her home. She assures him that the county has checked it out, and there is no lead paint in her home. She then goes on to tell him how good a mother her sister was, coming by every week while Bryant was living with her (the aunt) and taking him to the clinics to see the doctors.

F&F Nick pops his head into Jake’s office to discuss some files he has given Nick. Nick explains that they simply aren’t up to par. Jake apologizes, and assures Nick that he will take care of them and get them back to Nick on time. Jake confesses to Nick that he is helping Barbara take action against someone she entered into an on-line relationship with, and who is now trying to harass her. Nick asks if Jake needs him to take care of the files, but Jake tells him no. He then offers to help Jake with Barbara’s case, but Jake again refuses, saying he has everything under control.

A park Alvin meets with Janine, where he explains that the DA is offering him a deal to testify against her. She then mentions that the DA is working on Li, one of the girls who worked for her, and that Li will probably testify against her. Alvin says he doesn’t want to testify against her, emphasizing that he has told everyone that he was not a customer, that she never asked him for money, but that no one believes him.

A courtroom Jake is pleading Barbara’s defamation suit, explaining that there are law records going back to the 17th century in which a woman could claim defamation if a man claimed that she propositioned him for sex.
The kid stands up (he has no lawyer), and explains that he is covered by the first amendment. He goes on to say that he is no lawyer, only a pre-law student, but he has consulted with one of his professors, who has assured him that with the precedence set in the last few years, Barbara cannot do anything to him.

The Hallway Jake, clearly on a mission, asks Barbara if she ever asked the kid not to show the photos or correspondence, because if she did, they might be able to claim breach of contract. She tries to tell him he tried his best and to give up, but he won’t hear of it. She agrees to look back through her computer files to see if she can find any such request.

County Jail Nick goes to see Bryant’s mother again, and asks her why she has been feeding her son lead paint chips. She tries to deny it, but he points out to her that the medical records show that even after Bryant was living with his aunt, every time the mother took him to the clinic the lead levels in his blood spiked. The mother finally cracks (who wouldn’t under Nick’s cold, grey stare?), and says that she was only doing what Hansen told her to do, that otherwise Bryant’s lead levels were too low for him to bother with the case. She said Hansen told all the mothers in her project to do the same thing, that if they did, their claims would be worth millions.

So her legal case was against the County, stating that the poisoning was caused by lead paint in the buildings?

A streetcorner We see Jake hanging around on the corner. He’s wearing a team jacket of some kind and has on sunglasses and a baseball cap. The kid suddenly passes by him, and Jake spins around, punching him in the gut. He knocks the jerk down and kicks him a number of times in the stomach, telling the kid “Show some respect.”
LSoP, late at night Nick stops by to drop off or pick up some files, and sees Alvin there. Stopping to chat for a moment, Alvin tells Nick that he needed to get out of his apartment for a while, so he snuck in. He also tells Nick that he thought about him when he was in jail the other night. He says he’s been arrested before for protesting, but never for something . . . “Personal?” volunteers Nick. “Yeah, personal” answers Alvin. “It’s scary, isn’t it?” asks Nick.
Alvin asks “You were offered a deal while you were awaiting trial, weren’t you?” When Nick replies in the affirmative, Alvin questions “Why didn’t you take it?” Nick succinctly answers, “I didn’t do anything wrong.”
LSoP, next morning Jake stops by to see Barbara. She tells him she’s looked everywhere, but she can’t find anything where she asked the kid not to show the picture to anyone. She thanks Jake, saying she didn’t realize he cared so much about her until he took this case so personally. Jake looks very contrite, but confesses to Barbara about the kid and his thugs beating him up, saying “I’m a partner in a law firm now.” Barbara’s face falls when she realizes what Jake is saying. She apologizes to him for misunderstanding, saying that obviously what he wants is to get even with the jerk for beating him up.
