Ronnie was in several foster homes, and the foster mother immediately before the Wagoner’s asked that he be moved because she decided she would rather adopt a little girl. Laurie explains that as she placed Ronnie with the Wagoners, she feels responsible for the mother’s death.

Nick jumps out, calling her “You idiot! I’ve been parked here for five minutes. Didn’t you even look where you were going?” She tells him it’s just a dent, her brother works in a body shop and can fix it for him, but Nick demands she hand over her insurance information. As he’s jotting it down, she continues to try to talk him out of filing with the insurance company and thus raising her rates. He won’t listen. They hop in their cars and drive off.

Inside LSoP: Nick comes in carrying boxes of files (on Ronnie). Lulu sees him and welcomes him back, telling him how good it is to have him back, not just because of all the work. She then invites him to join her for a “welcome back” cup of coffee later. He agrees. She also tells him that she’s moved offices (probably into James’ old office), and he can have his closet back.

Nick goes into his office, where he calls Mr. Wagoner. He explains that he is Ronnie’s guardian, and that Ronnie has $10,000 and would like to pay for his mother’s funeral. Mr. Wagoner hangs up on him. Just then, in walks the defense attorney, who tells Nick that the coroner’s report has just come back on Mrs. Wagoner, and not only did Ronnie blow her head off, but he raped her afterwards. He then tells Nick that it’s going to be tried in adult court unless Nick can find evidence that Ronnie is worth trying to rehabilitate. Ronnie has refused to talk to the psychiatrists, and it is up to Nick to convince him to do so.

Ronnie’s jail cell Nick explains to Ronnie that he has to talk to the psychiatrists and answer their questions. Ronnie asks if they’ll be able to tell him why he killed his mother. Nick asks if he knows why he did, and Ronnie says “Yes, because I was mad at her.” Nick asks if he remembers it, and Ronnie says yes. Ronnie then goes on to tell how his Mom went on a trip to an amusement park that summer and they had ridden a roller coaster. She was terrified of the coaster, but rode it anyway, saying she felt safe with Ronnie near. Ronnie agrees to the tests.
