He goes out to Burton, tells him he has to go, and explains why. Burton, understanding completely that if Nick stays it will be a violation of his probation, tells him to go on, he’ll take care of things.

Rob comes out and asks where Nick is. Burton explains that he’s gone home, that he can’t work with them tonight because Rob and partner did coke. Rob looks unconcerned, apologizes, saying he forgot about Nick’s probation, and tries to explain how it’s just to help him work tonight. Burton is clearly disgusted with both Rob and his partner. Rob simply looks at him and says “Hey, Nick had problems, but I can deal with the drugs.”

F&F Nick comes into his office, his probation officer following him. Rob is in there working. Nick is NOT happy to see Rob there and tells him he has to leave. Nick, always mannerly, introduces his probation officer. Rob immediately starts trying to sell the concept of KidFinder to him as a way to track his probationers/parolees.As Nick walks around his desk he is shocked to see white powder on the desk surface next to a coffee cup. Dreading what he will see, he quickly looks at the other side of the cup and is relieved to see a Sweet-N-Low packet lying there open.
Nick finally gets him to leave, telling him to take his mess with him.

F&F, Burton’s office Rob goes into Burton’s office, explaining that Nick is meeting with his probation officer in his office, so now Rob needs somewhere else to work. As he gets comfortable at Burton’s table, Burton asks him about what happened back in ’96 that caused Rob to phone him about Nick.

Rob tells Burton a dramatic tale about how he and Nick went out partying, and how Nick did so much cocaine at this model party that he could barely walk, so Rob took him to the emergency room. Rob said that the doctors came out and told him that Nick left the emergency room without his shirt, so Rob had to track him down in the snow. Nick refused to go back to the emergency room and so Rob took him back to his apartment and stayed with him overnight to make sure he didn’t stop breathing. Rob explained that when Nick came out of the drugs he asked Rob to call Burton. Burton is touched that Nick asked Rob to call him.

Outside James points out that the arbiter, being a friend of Jake’s and a member of the same health club, should have recused himself. He said he didn’t know that Jake had become that kind of person.
