Jevees, I think he intended for the carbon monoxide from the engine to kill him. He had the car locked up and the windows shut off, etc.

The next morning Jake, who has slept on the extremely dingy and filthy couch, awakens to find the place even worse by daylight. Disheartened, he picks up his bag of groceries and leaves.

Hospital Nick is in a small sitting room talking to an agitated Jeremy. He is asking if Jeremy understands what the doctor has told them about schizophrenia. Jeremy says that they’ve told him he has to stay there for observation for 30 days. Nick confirms this. Jeremy starts telling Nick about how sometimes he feels himself almost slipping away.
Nick explains to Jeremy that his attorney is going to argue that he isn’t competent to undergo the hearing at this time.
Nick gets ready to leave, and Jeremy tells him to tell Uncle Burt that he’s sorry about everything. Then chuckling, he comments that kids all think that Bert and Ernie (from Sesame Street) are just these good friends when in fact they’re closet homosexuals.
Nick starts out the door. Jeremy, anguish in his voice, says, “Ernie, don’t leave for a while, please. I was just kidding about Bert and Ernie being gay.” Nick sits back down.

F&F Liz, Nick, and Burton are meeting. Nick explains that the judge has ruled that the hearing will be delayed if Jeremy gets treatment. Liz says she’s always worried that this would happen. When Nick asks why, she says that it runs in the family. Nick knows about great-aunt Donna, who jumped out of her apartment; then there’s the cousin her age who is in an institution; and his mother had these terrible mood swings . . . Burton cuts her off, saying they need to go.
As they go to leave, Burton tells Nick not to worry about this mental illness stuff.

Courthouse Out in the hall, Nick is explaining to Jeremy what will happen in the courtroom. Jeremy starts asking if Nick knows the judge. Nick says that he’s been before her before. Jeremy asks if Nick knows the other attorney. Nick replies that yes, he’s met him. Jeremy becomes very agitated, and starts saying that all of them are in his mother’s pay, just like he was telling Nick. He puts something in Nick’s hand and tries to flee. He is quickly caught by a bailiff, and is crying out to Nick for help.

Lulu’s house Lulu is setting the table. She calls out to Nick, asking him to come here, and asking him if he thinks she should seat Laurie and Alvin together as she thinks they dated a few times. Nick calls back “Who cares!”
Entering the room, Lulu asks Nick to get this blue dish down off a high shelf for her. As he does, she notices something on his sweater*. Leaving the room for a moment, Lulu returns with a floral apron which she insists Nick put on. Nick argues, but Lulu insists, saying if he’s going to grill he needs to put it on so he won’t get anything else on his clothes. Besides, she tells him, it’s sexy! Nick, grinning, finally agrees.
*Dark blue crew-neck sweater, long sleeves; dark trousers, what kind I don’t know.

The doorbell rings. Lulu asks Nick to get it (he’s tying on the apron). He points out that it’s her house, but she just grins and tells him to get the door.
Nick opens the door to Alvin, Laurie, and James. They exchange pleasantries as they enter, James saying “Pretty, pretty apron” and grinning widely. Nick just grins back wryly and thanks him.

Before he can follow the others into the other room, the doorbell rings again. This time it’s Jake, standing there forlornly with his bag of groceries. Nick, surprised to see him, asks why he’s not at the cabin. Jake mumbles something about going mad by yourself in the wilderness. He says he knew they were having a dinner party and asks for pity. Nick tells him to come on in. As he enters, he tells Nick “Nice apron.” “It’s sexy,” Nick replies with a grin.

Burton’s house Shannon is in her room packing. She tells Burton she wants to leave, that she’s not happy here, she doesn’t want to change schools, that his son looks down on her, and she doesn’t like being around Liz. Burton promises that if she stays he’ll make sure nothing happens to her. Shannon just looks at him and says “it already did, and everyone blamed me.” Burton asks her to please stay, and Shannon relents.

Lulu’s house The party is winding down. Everyone is complementing the food, Laurie asks for a recipe, etc. As everyone offers their thanks and heads to the door, James leans towards Nick and grinning, mumbles “Whipped, whipped, whipped,” while shaking his head. Nick just grins back at him as if to say, “Thanks bud.”
After they leave, Nick turns to Lulu and says, “Maybe I should clean up.” Lulu, smiling impishly at him asks “Do you think you can handle the upstairs?”
Nick, grinning: Unless you want to use the key that Alvin gave you.
Lulu, laughing: No!
Nick: Should I bring the apron? I think you’d look good in the apron!
Lulu: No, I think you do!
They are laughing together, headed upstairs, as black screen appears.
