The Next Life
Back in the old F&A, C&A offices
Burton, in his office, calls Nick in to talk for a minute (no anger in the voice).
Burton explains that business is slow right now as Nick knows, and he feels the firm is too large. As a result, they need to reduce their overhead. He asks Nick, So, how do you feel about this guy James? Nick says that while James doesnt have any corporate experience, hes a good lawyer. Burton tells him that may be so, but hes not bringing in any clients.

I thought the episode was called "The Next Life".
Poor James - things not looking good right from the get go ..
And why doesn't Burton do his own firing? Maybe all the dirty jobs fall to the junior partner.

Burton then tells Nick a list of three other lawyers he feels they should let go. The first, a woman, is waiting in the conference room. Nick states that she’s a good lawyer, has done well with them, but Burton replies that they’ve been carrying her along for some time now. He reiterates that she’s in the conference room, and tells Nick to go talk to her.

Good catch! I can't believe I called it the Afterlife! I've fixed it, by the way. No, doesn't look good for James from the get-go. As for why Burton doesn't do his own firing, that will come out later.

Nick complies. Through the window into the conference room we see Nick come in, greet the woman, and take a seat next to her. Burton, meanwhile, picks up his things and heads out of the office. He is stopped by the receptionist. He and the receptionist essentially frame the window to the conference room, where we see Nick talking to the female attorney, her look of shock and disappointment. He then gets up, and leaves the conference room.

Outside in the entry, Burton lays his hand on Nick’s arm and says “I know that was difficult. It always is.” He then asks Nick to walk him out. As they head towards the door, Burton goes on to tell Nick that from now on he wants Nick to keep on top of things, especially the hiring and firing. As Burton steps through the door, he turns and says “By the way, I took the liberty of going on and changing the name. I hope you don’t mind” as he gestures to the new name etched on the glass. (I’m not sure if it was behind the receptionist or on the door)

The Allegheny County Jail We see Martin Keenan (the nurse) being interviewed by a detective. He’s telling how sick the patients had been, and how he felt he was putting them out of their misery, helping them move from this life, which was over, to the next life. When the detective asks him if he would rather wait and have an attorney present, he replies, “No, it’s better this way.”
Fallin & Fallin James, in workout gear, is walking out through F&F. Jake stops him, says “Oh good, you’re still here. I need you to pull all these files for the hospital case.”
James collects the files, and takes them into the conference room. Despite his attire, Burton tells him he should sit down and take some notes on this. The hospital administrator starts explaining the case. Scarcely 20 seconds into the explanation, James looks at Burton and asks “Can we step out for a moment?” Burton looks a bit incredulous, and says “Now? Can’t it wait?” James replies, no, it can’t.

Burton, Nick, and James step out into the hall, where James quickly explains that his grandmother died about three months ago in the hospital’s oncology ward. Burton states “Well, then you can’t go back there,” to which James replies “I know.” He then picks up his gym bag and basketball and heads out the door. Through the door we hear Jake talking to the hospital administrator.

I'm assuming Jake is a partner now? What was Nick's reaction to the name change on the door?
And most important - was the Receptionist still Gretchen?

Hi all. Since TG isn't on here for another 90 mins. I thought I'd sit at the feet of the great scribe and ask questions and stuff ;D

I think Nick was a bit surprised at the name change, but we didn't get a chance to really see his reaction as it cut to commercial.
Yes, Jake is a partner now. We find that out in a little bit.
LOL, Annie! Get comfy . . .

I hope their letterhead is actually some kind of word processing template, because otherwise they are up for a fortune in printing costs.
