Back in the Ring
LSP Nick exits the elevator to find a client waiting for him. The man introduces himself as Tim Dohanek and says that Alvin said it was okay to come in so early. Nick says that’s fine, but he has a breakfast meeting in ten minutes, so let’s get this taken care of.

He explains that he is seeking custody of his son, Oscar (who is with him). Oscar’s mother just died recently. She was a drug addict and had contracted AIDs. Tim and she were never married, and Tim has only been out of prison for one year after serving a four-year sentence. Her parents have been taking care of Oscar while Tim was in prison and recently, and Tim wants custody.

Nick, taking a good look at Tim, asks if he’s been to LSP before. Tim tells him no. As they go into the conference room, Nick realizes where he recognizes Tim from. Tim is a boxer also known as the Mechanic, and Nick tells him that he and his father saw Tim fight before he was in prison. Nick promises to help Tim all he can. Tim brings up an issue with a pizza parlor he is considering buying into, and Nick tells him that they don’t handle those kinds of cases at LSP.

Lulu’s house Lulu is preparing for her first day back at the office. Caroline is trying to get her to take more time off, suggesting they have a shopping day and Lulu can start the next day. Lulu brushes her off and goes upstairs to retrieve something.
The doorbell rings. Caroline answers it to find a man there to serve her with a subpoena. Before she has a chance to look at it, Lulu calls out asking who was at the door. As Lulu starts down the stairs, Caroline quickly hides the subpoena in a basket of letters. Lulu asks Caroline about a prescription she had asked her mother to pick up the day before, but Caroline had forgotten. Lulu, a bit exasperated, declines a ride to work, saying she will walk to the pharmacy and catch a cab from there.
As soon as Lulu is out the door, Caroline grabs the subpoena and reads it.

Now I warned you. Please describe Lulu's haircut - how short?

Not too terribly short. Not as short as Nick's! It's cute. It's just a shorter version of this season's 'do.

F&F conference room Caroline is explaining to Nick and Burton that one of her former employees, Ben, is just making up the claims of bribery that have started this federal investigation. She says the $10,000 was a loan she made to him, not money to pay off a bribe. As she goes to leave, she mentions that her husband, Jerry, will be in town tomorrow.

As Nick and Burton head to Burton’s office, Nick mentions that he’s seen Tim “the Mechanic” Dohanek at LSP and that Tim was asking for business legal help. Burton tells Nick to have Tim stop by.

Caroline's husband, Jerry, is still around? I thought she had taken upon with Glen from Vermont. Her love life is as complicated as her daughters (or vice versa).

LSP Lulu arrives for her first day back, and is welcomed by James with open arms. James fills her in on how things stand—Barbara is out with back problems, and they don’t have a temp for her, so the phones are on answering machine. All Lulu’s cases have been continued as the caseload was too heavy for the slack to be picked up while she was gone, and there is even a client waiting to see her in her office. And by the way, when they have to go to court, they have to park very far away, as Alvin will no longer pay for the nearby parking lots.

I think Glen was the husband before this one. Jerry Novak is the current husband, and he's still in Philadelphia.

Lulu, digesting this news, goes in to see Alvin. She asks if LSP is having financial difficulties, which Alvin confirms. He says they are about $4,000 short for payroll currently, and their funding is going to be late coming in. With this news, Lulu heads to her office.

Before she gets there, she sees Nick, who has been meeting with Tim Dohanek. Nick asks her how her headaches are, and she says she hasn’t had any lately. She thanks Nick for the beautiful plant he sent her, and says that she put it in her bedroom, just as he suggested. Nick looks pleased, and tells her that the florist said that the oxygen produced by the plant would help her heal after her accident. Before she can head off, Nick tells Lulu that there’s something they need to do. Lulu pauses, and Nick says “We need to get you a new car.”
