You left out the "outstanding" part . That's terribly important.

Burton is waiting for Nick in his office. He explains that Roy Cantwell showed up after Nick left, and that he wants custody of Shannon. There is a custody hearing set for tomorrow, and he’d like Nick to be there. Nick, expressionless, agrees. Burton leaves.

Alvin now pops in to “borrow Nick’s cell phone to make a call.” He’s smiling a bit, but not overly so. Nick, not flinching a muscle, asks what this is about. Alvin explains that Taleek’s ex-girlfriend has been picked up because of her new boyfriend’s connections to drugs and that the baby has been placed in a shelter temporarily. He says the news came in last night and he tried to reach Nick on his cell phone . . .
Nick, not even looking up, simply says it was broken.

After Alvin leaves, Nick goes over to James’ office. He point-blank asks James if he knows who contacted social services about Sharnelle. James claims he has no knowledge of this. Nick doesn’t really believe him, but leaves.

Minutes later, a police detective shows up to talk to James. He explains that Taleek Allen stopped by to talk to him about his assault. According to the detective, Taleek claims that James took part in this assault. James denies this as well, and the detective leaves.

Therapist’s office Nick has arrived for his second visit. The therapist looks over the worksheets and says, “You didn’t really answer any of the questions.” Nick, ever serious, replies, “Yes I did.” He has answered every question in one word, mostly monosyllabic at that. The only question he provides a longer answer for is “What was the happiest time of your life?” Nick answered, “It hasn’t happened yet.”<br>

The therapist, realizing he’s not going to get anything out of Nick, tosses the book back on the sofa next to Nick and tells him to finish the rest of the book and he’ll see him on Friday. Nick says “I look forward to it.”

Courthouse Nick runs into Lulu in the hall between hearings. Nick starts asking how she liked Berkely, and Lulu starts enthusing about it, the facility, and how much nicer San Francisco is compared to Pittsburgh. Nick doesn’t look thrilled at all, but tells her about the symphony benefit Friday, asking if she wants to go. Lulu says sure, and tells him, “If you want to, come by later.” Nick says he will.
