Nick meets up with Taleek outside the courtroom. Taleek tells Nick to keep James away from him, saying that he knows what James did. He even asks Nick if he was involved. Nick says no, he wasn’t.

The only question he provides a longer answer for is “What was the happiest time of your life?” Nick answered, “It hasn’t happened yet.”
Hi ladies. I found this part so sad. To think that in 33 years, there hasn't been a happy moment. Not even when his mother was alive. I just wanted to shout, I'll make you happy!!!! Actually, I think I did.

Inside Judge Damsen’s courtroom, the judge announces that she has taken everything into consideration, and it is her decision that the child would best be placed in foster care, with neither parent having custody. Both Sharnelle and Taleek are furious, Sharnelle trying to attack Taleek, and Taleek telling Nick that James cost him his son.

Outside the courtroom, James is waiting to ask Nick how it went. Nick tells him to stay away from Taleek, that what he’s doing isn’t helping.

Another hallway at the courthouse Nick arrives before Shannon’s custody hearing. He goes to sit with Burton. Shannon is sitting with her father chatting.

In the courtroom Nick, representing Burton, recites part of Roy Cantwell’s job history, among other items showing Roy’s impropriety as a guardian for Shannon. He points out that currently Shannon has been living with “a respected member of our society, who wants to be a good father to her.” Nick doesn’t look too comfortable as he says this last bit.

After the hearing, in which Burton retains custody of Shannon, Roy is furious that he is only to get one hour with Shannon per month. He tries to wheedle Burton into letting him see Shannon more often, but Burton stands firm, saying that Shannon needs to learn to live by a new set of rules now, etc. Roy takes offence at this, saying that Burton doesn’t think he’s good enough to take care of Shannon. He then throws the episode with Jeremy trying to rape Shannon back in Burton’s face, saying that Burton “let” it happen.

Taleek’s place James goes to see Taleek again, saying he wants to help Taleek. He tells him he’s found him a job working nights at the courthouse, offers him money for rent, etc. Taleek tells him he needs to leave.

LuLu’s house Nick and LuLu are in bed. (Nick is half-sitting, one leg outside the covers as well as his usual torso shot ) He asks LuLu if she’ll take the job if it’s offered to her. She says she doesn’t think it will be offered, but asks him if he would take it if it were a big law firm in L.A. Nick simply says he can’t leave Pittsburgh. LuLu, a bit exasperated, changes her question, asking if he would after his probation was over. Nick, frowning, looks at her and asks “What’s going on here?”
LuLu, a little smile on her lips: “I heard you threw a cell phone in court the other day.”
Nick: “Yeah.”
LuLu: “What was that about?”
Nick, grimly: “It seems I’m an angry person.”
Nick doesn’t say anything more, but gets out of bed (he has on boxers! ) and starts dressing. LuLu: “Where are you going?”
Nick: “Home.”
Silence Note: When the scene first opens, it's like Wow! He's got nothing on and not only do we see his chest but his WHOLE leg too! Then he gets out of bed and we see blue and white striped boxers. I really thought for a moment we were to think he was completely nude.

F&F Burton is meeting with Clay Simms when his secretary pops in. She apologizes for interrupting, but explains that the school secretary called. Shannon didn’t show up at school today. Burton excuses himself.
