Brian enters the waiting room. Nick asks if Brian saw the doctor, to which Brian says yes. Brian tells Nick that he’s here now, Nick can go, he (Brian) will take care of things from here.

I don't know Spunky. We don't actually see what it is, it's just inferred that it is a painkiller.

Caroline rushes in (she was at the health club). Brian steps up and explains LuLu’s condition, saying that there is swelling, but the doctors have started her on manitol to help drain the fluid off, and if it continues to swell, they’ll have to put a shunt in. Brian also tells Caroline that he has called a specialist he knows from Shadyside, a doctor who specializes in head traumas.
Nick is effectively abandoned to the side.

F&F Nick enters the lobby. As he walks past the conference room, we see Burton meeting with young Mr. Clayton and the shop stewards about Clayton Steel.

Nick’s office Jake comes in, Nick is hard at work. Jake asks about Lulu, then about Nick’s hand. He tells Nick he shouldn’t be there, that he should go back to the hospital, that he (Jake) has already talked to Burton about covering for Nick right now. Nick says okay, explaining what he’s working on.
He explains that he needs Jake to find out how many accidents there have been at that intersection in Mt. Aire.

I don't know, Hales. I don't know if he had stitches, if it was broken, or what. Apparently that was Nick's worst injury, and it was bad enough the doctor gave him prescription pain killers.

Down the hall, outside Lulu’s room, Nick overhears Caroline and Brian talking. Brian says that his friend the neurosurgeon says that they should take other measures. Caroline tells him she doesn’t think he should even be a part of this, to which Brian retorts “She’s still my wife.” Caroline snaps back “Only on paper!”

Brian leaves Lulu’s room, sees Nick slumped in a chair by the door. He very civilly asks about Nick’s hand, and asks if he’s there to see Lulu. Nick says they won’t let him go in to see Lulu, that he hasn’t seen her since the accident. Brian leaves. Nick remains outside the door. He hears Caroline sobbing inside. He’s clearly torn, wanting desperately to enter the room, but he holds himself back, merely poking his head in for a moment to say in Caroline’s direction “If there’s anything I can do . . .”
