Sensitive Jackals
F&F conference room Nick is presiding over a partners meeting. He announces that last year’s billings were at a ten-year low. To help rectify this problem, he thinks they should diversify into criminal defense. Burton disagrees, says that doing so would sully their name and reputation. Shannon interrupts, asking Burton where the markers are for her project. Nick is aggravated, but continues.

He says that Clay Sims, Belden’s top associate is leaving, and he (Nick) wants to bring him in. Shannon interrupts again, telling Burton she can’t reach the colored paper. Nick is becoming more aggravated, but keeps his cool. Jake mentions that he knows Sims from high school, and starts talking about how they played football together, etc.
Note: Remember, Belden is the defense attorney called in when Nick was in trouble, both for the drugs and in the mess with Mandy Gressler.

Thanks lambertoise! It's because I take notes while I watch (to write up the summaries!). Once I write it down and type it up, I tend to remember it.

After the meeting, in the hallway Burton gets after Nick for what he said to Shannon. Nick, still upset, tells Burton that he needs to get his head back into this firm, that his work is slipping. He implies that Burton is letting this whole thing with Shannon distract him from his work. He even mentions that Burton has missed a number of important meetings, and that clients are starting to complain. Burton, incensed, says they haven’t said anything to him. Nick replies that no, they’ve been coming to him.

LSP Nick has gone by to drop off his time sheets for Alvin to look over. Alvin takes the sheets and tells Nick he has a client waiting in his office. Nick tries to tell Alvin he can’t stay, that he has this class to attend to maintain his license, but Alvin ignores his protests and tells him repeatedly to see the man in his office.
Nick goes into the broom closet to meet the client. The young man’s name is Taleek Allen, and he has been hospitalized recently because of a violent assault which has left him disfigured. Nick asks Taleek if they can reschedule the meeting for tomorrow as he has another meeting to be at, but Taleek says the hearing is today. Taleek’s ex-girlfriend, Sharnelle, is trying to keep him from seeing their son.

The Radison Nick and Jake are outside the conference room where the continuing education class, “Practical Litigation Symposium,” is supposed to take place. Nick explains to Jake that he intends to sign in, head over to the courthouse to take care of the hearing, then come back and sign in for the second half of the class. Just then, a judge, whom Nick knows, comes over to speak to them. He asks Nick if he’s there for the symposium. When Nick says yes, the judge announces he’s teaching the symposium and looks forward to seeing Nick there.

Nick, desperate, rushes over to the courthouse. He finds James, quickly explains the case and hands off the file to James, then heads back to the Radison.

Yes, that's what he says. Apparently they have to do so many hours of this continuing education during a time period to keep their license up to date. Nick tells Alvin that it's nearing the end of the period and he's short on hours so he has to go to this symposium.

Nick quietly slips into the symposium late, asking Jake what he’s missed. The judge starts explaining that in order to discuss litigation, they’re going to stage a mock trial. Law students from Penn will serve as the witnesses; there will be a volunteer jury. He then asks for volunteers to be defense and prosecuting attorneys. Burton, sitting near the front, volunteers. He then, much to everyone’s surprise, volunteers Nick to argue the case against him.

Courthouse Taleek’s hearing. The girlfriend claims he has had no contact with his son for six months. Taleek tries to argue that he has been in the hospital, but she refuses to listen. Judge Damsen has to ask James to control his client several times, and finally has to ask the bailiff to restrain Taleek when he tries to go after Sharnelle. It is obvious that he carries a lot of anger resulting from his injury.

Let's just say that Nick sees it as making their fight public, and he is not at all happy about it.

The Incline Jake arrives early for a lunch meeting with Clay Sims. He tells Sims that despite what happened back in high school, he’s willing to speak up for Sims if Sims will let all that remain in the past. It is clear that Sims considers himself superior to Jake.
