Spunky, I think he was there because they anticipated trouble. There was so much opposition to the project that it was felt he should be there. As it was, they were right.

Burton’s Judge’s Chambers Agent Calphas is there, and is playing the audio tape that Lichtman gave her of Burton and Caldwell discussing Nick’s case. She tells Burton that she recommends he tell her everything up front (the cassette doesn’t actually have them talking about money). Burton says that they were just old friends, and he turned to Caldwell for advice. Calphas says it sounds more like the senator is telling Burton to fork over the dough. She offers Burton one more chance to tell the whole truth. He remains silent.

Hallway at the courthouse Nick is standing there when Alvin brings over a woman (one of the family members from the cemetery case). He explains that she is claiming that Burton got her sister pregnant, and then left her. The sister had an abortion, and bled to death afterwards. Nick, clearly incensed, turns to Alvin and says the immortal words “Are you trying to blackmail my father?” When Alvin says no, Nick then says “Then you’re trying to blackmail me.” (NWO)

Burton’s Judge’s Chambers Tom (the bald guy) is telling Burton all about Lichtman’s habits of taping conversations that Caldwell had with people. He said that Lichtman at one point was disbarred over this stuff, and even spent a year in the federal penitentiary.
Just then, Nick appears, popping his head through the door. He apologizes for interrupting, but Tom says that’s okay and leaves. Nick tells Burton what Alvin has just confronted him with.

Courthouse Hallway Burton meets with Judith (the sister). He apologizes for everything. She tells him he has got to stop the cemetery excavation. He tries to explain how he can’t get involved because of his position, and she tells him that that is exactly why he has to stop it.

Courthouse Hallway Nick and Burton are discussing the situation. Nick says he will make some other deal so he can spare Burton. Burton looks him square in the eye and says “Nicholas, don’t ever compromise your work. Ever.” Nick tries to argue that it will compromise him (Burton), but Burton just says it will happen anyway. He keeps repeating that it will happen anyway. He then tells Nick that if Nick doesn’t want to do it, then “get one of your boys to do it.”
The Incline Nick and Kim are sitting side by side in a booth. They are making awkward attempts at conversation, trying to talk about baseball. Suddenly, they see Lulu and the Goose (ahem), sorry, Brian have come in. Kim quickly invites Lulu and Brian to join them.

The Diner Burton and Mary Gressler are talking about Shannon. She’s telling him about how last night Shannon slept with one of Mandy’s old baby blankets, and that this morning she brought it downstairs and asked Mary if it could be buried with Mandy. Mary asks Burton “What about your son? Did he have a special baby blanket.” Burton looks caught off guard, and answers “I don’t know.” She asks if he means he can’t remember, and he sadly shakes his head and says, “No, I don’t know.”
Mary asks Burton how long he’s been a judge, and he then tells her his investiture is scheduled for Friday but “it might not happen.”
He then tells Mary about his and Shannon’s conversation at the courthouse. She laughs and tells him she saw it coming, as Shannon always assumes that rich men are looking for one thing in particular. They talk about how they actually have things in common, sad things. As they part, she asks Burton to come with them the next day.
