Fallin and Straka Nick is on the phone making calls to try to line up new clients. Jake and James are playing basketball and quibbling over who owes who money (for the game). Nick gets off the phone, and as he leaves, tells them they should consider finding them some clients.

Caldwell and Assoicates We see Caldwell at his desk (formerly Burton’s). He is polishing a photo in a silver frame. He takes a box from his desk drawer, takes out two pens, polishes them and lays them neatly on the desk in front of him. Just then his administrative assistant beeps to tell him his 9:30 appointment has arrived. Caldwell tells her to have them wait a moment.
Out in the lobby, a woman in a suit turns to a man in an FBI jacket and asks him how his weekend went.
Cut back to Caldwell in the inner office. He takes another, larger box from his desk, starts to open it . . .
Out in the main office, the agents talking, a gunshot rings out. One of the men says “What the hell was that?”<br> Cut to opening sequence.

May I just say that Caldwell is a major wuss because he couldn't face the FBI... yes I know he could have gone to jail and whatnot... but wasn't that just cowardly?

A Diner Mary Gressler is waiting tables. Burton walks in and starts talking to her. He gives her an envelope, explaining it’s a college fund that he’s opened up for Shannon. She doesn’t look pleased, and says she can take care of her own granddaughter, and tries to turn away.
Burton takes a seat in her station and orders coffee. He apologizes for missing Mandy’s funeral, but Mary explains that they haven’t had one yet, as her husband Howard has surfaced from Atlantic City and is trying to claim the body. He wants to have her cremated and sprinkled across a stage in Atlantic City. Burton says that if she likes, he’ll have Alvin help her try to get custody of the body.

Of course he was a wuss, Hales. But remember, the man's major advisor was a space alien . . .

Burton’s Judge’s Chambers Burton’s personal assistant is there going over the week’s schedule—his investiture and robing is scheduled for Friday.
The FBI agent (Agent Calphas) who was present when Caldwell shot himself drops by to see Burton and breaks the news that Caldwell has committed suicide. Burton is clearly shocked. Agent Calphas says that she has found evidence that Caldwell and Lichtman were accepting bribes while Caldwell was in office. She knows that Burton and Caldwell had been old friends, and asks if he ever saw evidence of this. Burton says no. She offers her condolences and leaves.

Was Burton telling the truth then? or was he hiding something?

The Incline It’s lunch time, and Nick is talking to a county commissioner about the cemetery deal. The commissioner wants to know why Nick thinks he’s going to give the deal to Nick and his new partners. Nick tells him that he can always go to his father’s old firm and have them dig up all the information out of files that he (Nick) has already memorized.

The deal where he offered Caldwell a partnership in exchange for his help with Nick's legal problems was a HUGE bribe.
Nick memorises files? He really needs to get a life.
