Next we’re at the hospital. Burton is talking to a woman doctor (about his age and attractive!). She says Mandy has brain damage because the paramedics weren’t able to get there fast enough. She says Mandy is on a respirator, and that she’ll never wake up.
Burton calls the doctor Rachel, and asks how long she can keep Mandy alive. Rachel replies that it could be years, it could be days.
We see Burton stand at the window to the room, looking in, where Mandy lies in bed, her daughter sitting in a chair beside the bed.

Burton asks to speak to Nick alone, and the attorney leaves the room. Nick immediately tells Burton that he should stay away from this to protect himself. Is this the first time Burton and Nick are alone together post-phone-call?

Yes it is, iconic. Well, at least it is the first time we know they have been alone.

Burton is driving down the street, and pulls over when he sees Mandy’s daughter hitch-hiking. He gives her a lecture about the dangers of doing that, but she gets in the car and tells him she saw him at the hospital. She wants to know if he knew Mandy (that’s what she calls her), because “Mandy dates guys like you.”
Burton says no, he’s never met Mandy, but that his son was with Mandy when she got hurt and is now in trouble because of it.

Shannon wants to go to Dilmont (sp?), where she and Mandy live with “Uncle Phil.” They’ve only lived there a few months. As he pulls up to the house, Shannon asks him if he’s got $20. He gives it to her, saying “I’m sorry about your mom.” She replies “Mandy? We all knew it was going to happen one of these days,” and gets out of the car.

Back at the jail . . . Nick, Burton, and Belden. Nick emphasizes that they have to prove that he had no prior associations with Mandy. He tells them that Darger will back him up on this—they seem confused. Darger who? Nick tells them about calling Darger as Mandy was there.

Burton and Belden are on the street talking to Darger. Darger says yes, he talked to Nick that night. No, he doesn’t remember exactly what was said, he couldn’t hear it all that well. Before they part, Burton asks Darger some specific questions. He does say he can testify that Nick did call him. Darger says that they should talk to Mary Gressler, to whom he also talked. At Burton’s enquiry, he tells them she’s in the phone book, she lives out in Braddock.

Burton goes back to the house where Shannon and Mandy live. He asks if “Uncle Phil” is back, and as he isn’t, invites Shannon for a hamburger.
While they’re sitting there (she eating, he drinking a cola), she tells him that she’s eleven. He tells her that his son knew Mandy and is in trouble over Mandy’s accident. He takes out his wallet and shows her a picture of Nick wearing a ski cap (I think I also saw skis).
Burton asks if Mandy was . . . earlier in the day when she was with Shannon. Shannon jumps in and volunteers “Partying?” and says yes, Mandy was.

Jake visits Nick in jail, and brings him some Elmore Leonard books to pass the time (he said the guy at the bookstore said they were good). He tells Nick that the other two associates from F&A they were talking with went back to Caldwell, and that Caldwell offered him his old job back. Nick calmly tells him to take it. At this, Jake reaches into his wallet, and pulls out a business card which he presses to the glass. He says “Fallin and Straka. I already had these made up.” He makes it clear he wants to wait for Nick, but Nick advises him to take Caldwell’s offer.

Burton enters LSoP with Shannon in tow. Mary Gressler is there, as are Alvin and Lulu. When she sees Shannon, she asks, “Where’s Amanda?” Alvin gently breaks the news to her about Mandy. She’s clearly distraught heads out the door with Shannon.

Burton and Alvin are having a drink (at the Incline?). Burton tells Alvin he wants to keep tabs on Shannon because he wants her to testify, and asks Alvin how best to do so. Alvin tells him he needs to go through the grandmother, as she is now Shannon’s legal guardian.
They then chat a little about Nick, and Burton asks Alvin, “Alvin, does Nick ever talk to you, really talk to you?” When Alvin asks what he means, Burton says, “You’ve never had kids, have you?” Then follows the little conversation about Nick unwinding from the spoilers, and Alvin says “Do you ever unwind Burton?”
